Help Gluing Oval Thumb Insert
« on: December 17, 2010, 12:26:01 PM »
I use the Vise ProV2 Oval thumb inserts and the trouble happens when I am gluing the insert into the thumb hole after the bowler has aligned the insert. I place a mark on the ball and a mark on the insert to realign to the correct position. OK, the glue I use is the Krazy Glue Gel form. I glue the thumb hole, press the thumb insert into the hole then it always happens about 3/4 of the way into the thumb hole the insert starts to get really hard to push into the thumb hole the last 1/4. I usually have to hit the insert really hard with the palm of my hand or slam the insert on the floor for the insert to reach the bottom the thumb hole.

Does anyone have a better process of gluing the oval thumb insert and keeping the alignment?

I just hate to push the insert into the thumb hole to fast because it makes it difficult to keep the oval thumb insert alined. I could use round thumb inserts where it wouldn't matter but I and alot of people I drill for like these oval thumbs.

Thanks
Mike

About how much of this Epoxy is place into the thumb hole to glue the insert? Is a good size drop placed into four different regions of the thumb hole enough?

Thanks
Mike

Turbo sells slow-zip glue for inserts and slugs that is gap filling, also there are other extended time super glues including Loctite 15 second, which is sold at Home Depot.
If you are looking for a specific type of glue, a good hobby shop is another place to find all types of glues and cure rates.

I use 1hr epoxy for my inserts.  Usually don't have a problem waiting an hour to use the ball.

I had issues with my molds coming loose and sliding out w/ regular liquid and gel super glue, so switched to a 30min work life epoxy for my molded thumb slugs. It is a 2 part epoxy and usually about a nickle size amount is plenty for a slug. Hope this helps!

This!  Its all I use.  Its the Loctite 5 min epoxy at Home Depot.  I switched from super glue in May and have never had a problem since.

i use a nickle/quarter size drops of each(resin/hardener).  Do the mix dance with both, and then smear all around inside of hole, leaving a strip clean for the breather hole that runs up the length of the slug.

Just a thought instead of using your palm or bouncing it on the floor. Just a get a rubber mallet and tap it in with that.

I use a mixing stick and smear the epoxy around the hole and slide the slug in twisting around as I go with my thumb in the slug to coat it as it is going in! I also pull the slug up and down as I am inserting it to get a light coating on the slug itself. Before any of this, I buzz the hole with my bevel sander to make sure it fits in snug but NOT rediculously tight so I can slide and turn the slug!

1. Bevel sand the hole so the insert slides in easy but not loose.
2. Put the ball on the press so the insert is square to the drill chuck.
3. Put glue in the thumb hole and not on the insert.
4. Barely put the insert in the top of the hole and line it up.
5. Use a 1 3/8 slug between the chuck and thumb insert and "press" the insert in using the drill.

This will keep the insert aligned while pressing the insert in smoothly and fast enough to prevent it from sticking. Also since the slug is bigger than the insert, it will stop pressing as it hits the ball, leaving the insert flush.

+1 with the way bluerrpilot installs slugs.  Way easier then using a hammer or mallet
