Pin Placement 2
« on: September 27, 2005, 07:04:35 AM »
What does placing the pin toward the thumb hole do?  I need the ball to arc with a big hook.  I hope someone knows.

The nearer the pin to the thumb hole (or better: grip center!), the earlier the ball will roll. The pin should not get closer to the thumb than the grip center. Declining the distance between the pin and the PAP will change the reaction intensity. 3 3/8" from PAP, the reaction is the strongest; getting closer to the finger holes and your track makes the reaction milder.
Additionally, placement of the CG affects ball reaction, too.

For your problem I'd suggest drilling the ball with the pin 1" next to or below your ring finger, the CG in the palm and the mass bias (a line 6 3/4" long, drawn from Pin through the CG marking) on the left side of your thumb. Should give a smooth, continous hook. A ball with a 1-3 pin to CG distance should be a good ball choice. A matt surface finish also adds to the smooth but strong overall hook motion.

Good luck.

PS:
If you want the ball to hook a lot (and since I do not know your specs and bowling experience, but I guess you are e nebie ), also think about getting things done with a different release to create hook. If your release is weak, simply buying a new ball and even drilling it strong will not solve the "problem" in the long run.

If I'm not mistaking, full rollers use pin down by thumb hole drillings.
