Let me start by saying that I love this ball and in it's present configuration it's pretty consistant for me. However it was drilled by a less than great driller, and I now know that it at least has too much finger weight if not other problems. As I said before this layout is very consistant, but nowhere near the reaction that I see others getting out of their Cell's. So the pics are at http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z88/Smokey469/ gimme some suggestions... btw I'm RH, 15-16 mph, med track, tweener, PAP 5"x1"up

OK, so you have a lot of options on ball reaction. What KIND of reaction do you want to get from your Cell? Why is your current ball reaction not desirable? Do you want something for heavier oil? Do you want something to get through the heads and retain energy on medium conditions? Do you want something a little earlier and smoother, or do you want a little later and more angular at the breakpoint?
(I personally opted for a weaker layout (don't know the exact numbers, but it's close to 6x3 or 6x4 with the pin underneath my middle finger). This means I will get strong ball movement, but not as strong as other people will see. However, it lets me play a little more direct and use surface to smooth out the reaction. This gives me a very, very forgiving ball on both house shots and sports shots, but it still carries exceptionally well)

Well it's pretty much a mild continuous hook, I was primarily bowling in an old wood house that lucky to see what I would call medium oil. I'm now primarily bowling in a synthetic house that oils more on the med/heavier side, plus some pba patterns now and then. I would like it to be a bit more aggressive and angular, but still be a somewhat versatile ball.

1. Finger weight, as long as it's legal, has not one blessed effect on a dynamic cored ball, no less an asymmetric one, like the Cell. Mine has negative 5/8 oz side weight the ball is a killer of strong oil.
2. That drilling looks just fine, based solely on your PAP. HOWEVER, axis tilt and rotaiton could make that drilling less than desireable for you. All that should HAVE BEEN taken into account before drilling.
3. If you're seeing less than medium oil, BINGO! small wonder the reaction is bad. The ball is designed for medium-heavy oil for the avergae rev, avg ball speed bowler. Try either of these surface changes: 1. sand to 4000 grit and leave matte/dull (Stock is 2000 grit). 2. Sand to 600 - 800 grit and add adecent level of polish, but not a super high gloss. Both will get you more length and more backend, safely.

Is there a weight hole in that puppy?
-
I was wondering about the side weight also!!!! ????
-
Ok let me run down the list here, I have tried many different surfaces on this ball with no significant change in reaction. The finger weight is not legal, no weight hole, unsure of side weight. Also the reaction regardless of surface is almost identical from the old wood house to the new synthetic house, that's what made me think that the drilling was bad...

-
I also wonder: I do not see a balance hole on the Cell? With the CG swung out that much towards the PAP, it SHOULD IMHO need a balance hole to be legal at all? Or does it have a weird weight distribution with only little top weight?
No wonder it just has a smooth and continous motion...

Starting top was 3.32oz

Yeah, I gotta agree there's no way that ball has a legal weight distribution (aside from the just the "The finger weight is not legal" thing he already mentioned)
-
Well I was kinda thinking the same thing as far as the x-hole goes, just was wondering what everyone else thought. I guess since we're looking you guys can take a look at the Pluto to if you want since it was drilled by the same guy...

Smokey,
I just assumed the weight hole wasn't visible. Now that you say there isn't one, the ball cannot be legal as it stands, if it started with 3.3 oz of top.
I still find it very hard to believe that changes in surface did not change the breakpoint and the backend. Bizarre ball.
Be careful where you put the weight hole it can make some major changes to the ball. DOn't put it above your PAP, if at all possible. Drill the fingers deeper if necessary.
Why not find a good local pro shop before doing anything with that ball? You're going to need one anyway, aren't you?

Well there is a much more reputable shop inside the new center I'm bowling in, I was just looking for some suggestions layout wise for this and the Pluto before I had them re-drilled...

Normally, for the avg rev, avg ball speed guy wanting to use it on medium oil, I'd suggest pin around 5" from PAP, for you, because your PAP is 1" up, that would mean pin above the area of the bridge, MB, 4" or so from the PAP, 75-90 degree PAP-pin-MB, more or less.
FYI I had a VERY hard time finding enough oil for my Cell so I tried the two surface changes. I all but guarantee that 4000 grit will make it go longer with more backend, on true medium oil, as will that 600 grit sanding plus polish. 4000 grit make the ball cover the ENTIRE lane for me. The 600 grit sanding made the ball retain a controlled backend when used with a light polish, preferably an abrasive-free polish.

Unofficial Ballreviews.com FAQ (http://"http://home.mchsi.com/~s-cross-7-28-71/FAQ.htm")

Smokey, having too much finger and side weight will keep the ball from reading the middle part of the lane properly, especially for what you are wanting the ball to do. You also have to realise that what others are getting out of their cells will be different compared to what you might get, because of your rev rate and axis tilt. Now are you wanting the ball to be more aggressive in the backend, or more agressive in the middle part, like a very hard arc? If you want it to be more on the backend, then putting the pin at 5 1/2 from your pap would help that with a hole just inside your pap or on the midline and take it down to 1/2 ounce side. But if you are wanting it to be more in the midlane like a hard arc but still some pop on the backend, then you could do 4 1/2 from your pap and put the pin closer to the midline, like 3 1/2 inches and mas bias 4 1/2 as well with a hole on the midline, and if you put some surface on this second layout, it will still be strong, but just a little sooner because of the surface. Hopes this helps

Yes, the ball is not legal by the looks of it. Way too much side and probably close to too much finger weight also. The ball is probably going too long now, reacting too late. An extra hole will make the ball start hooking sooner, thus making it stronger down the lane. Good luck. =:^D

Well ball is fixed now, it took a HUGE weight hole(2.5" deep and bigger than my thumb) just outside and below the cg to get it legal, but it's like a whole new ball. Threw a game with it on the Scorpion and the backend was drastically different! So thanks for all the help guys

Considering the ball wasn't even drilled legally before, it might not be a bad idea to make sure your x-hole isn't illegally large!
Good to hear it is working better now
