I was wondering how many times a bit should be used before it needs sharpened.

We sharpened all our bits once a year, drilling about 800 balls a year.
Commonly used bits like 31/32 would be getting pretty dull by then. It wouldn’t hurt to have it sharpened every 6 months or keep 2 of that size.
