Help with a Rico layout
« on: January 10, 2009, 09:37:13 PM »
I laid out a Brunswick Real Speed using the Rico method.  The instructions call for a pretty decent sized balance hole, but when I threw the ball on my scale after drilling the finger holes and thumbhole the finger weight is only a quarter ounce away from being out of spec.  Would it be better to just drill a smaller balance hole or to drill the fingers deeper to help offset the larger balance hole?

Thanks!

Place the hole at 6 3/4" from the pin through the CG. I suggest a 1" bit at least 2" deep. The weight hole is necessary in the reaction.

Static weights are irrelevant, as far as effecting the balls reaction or the results.

leftyinsnellville,

"only a quarter ounce away from being out of spec"
means, if I interpret correctly, you still have 3/4 ounces of thumb weight. This is more than enough to put a decent size of x-hole for the purpose.

and ofcourse, I agree that, statics are irrelevant..

Does this mean you have 3/4 oz of finger weight?  If so, either you layed the ball out wrong or the cg was badly mismarked.  After drilling, the cg should be in the thumb positive quadrant, the distance depends on the ball's pin out.  But it should have significant thumb and positive side weight which will allow the balance hole required.  And the static weight might not have impact on ball reaction, but any ball that comes out of my shop will be USBC legal.  --  JohnP

I think we ALL are very aware that if a ball weighs over current USBC specs, it would be illegal. I am also sure that most are well aware that when I say static weights are irrelevant, I mean in regards to overall reaction.

But thanks for pointing that out...

Sorry, Ric.  The way you worded your response made me think you were recommending just putting the hole where it needed to be without worrying about legality.  --  JohnP
