Help with new ball selection and finger latout..!!
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:33:55 PM »
Well guys im back in the game for the first time since 2006, where I had a bit of an incident at work that broke 2 bones in my hand with tendon and nerve damage. ( pic below ) And am going to jump back on leagues this fall  and thought I would ask for a little advice from you guys..

The ball I throw now is a Zone black ice, which is nice, but im thinking of just polishing it up and using it for a light / medium oil ball, So I just dont want to but a new version of what I already have already, So im looking for something aggressive , but controlled..  The ones I have been looking at Have been pretty hi end balls with a heavy backend ( from what Ive been told ) such as the C system 3.5, Mission, Jigsaw corner, Evil Siege, Invasion etc , and am wondering if thats gonna be to much ball for me.. The Zone Im throwing now is 16 lbs, and Im getting it down around 16 mph, with a "guesstimated" 350 Rev..

Im standing pretty far to the left and try to have more of a heavy curve than a heavy hook on the backside, if that helps any.. I know its hard for you guys to judge, but the local proshop in town has NOT drilled alot of these balls, so I cant get alot of info on them  as far as how they react or how they should be drilled..  Ill let you know what kind of oil patterns are used when I get a chance to know myself

Oh and also I will be dropping to a 15# possibly even a 14, Unless thats too much of a drop..

The DZ Black Ice was a heavy hooking ball 10 years ago, its now a dart.  If you are hooking it that much you might want to look at the weaker balls.  Check out the Columbia Freeze, Storm Fast/Furious, Track 505a, Ebo Smash/Bash and my new fav Roto Nomad solid.

All the balls you've mentioned are pretty strong (as in, need lots of oil on the lane for them to work). I'd suggest going with something weaker, look for something in the mid-range of what most companies have right now and that should be ok. 15-14 should be fine, just take care not to muscle the ball too much which can be a temptation with the lighter weight

Ive been told that recently too, Are you suggesting weaker balls because I have a hi rev considering I can still get this weak ball to hook good, or Is it just the fact that unless oil conditions are heavy I wont have the best luck with something as aggressive as one of the balls I mentioned?  I was also looking at the Reign of fire and the wild thing as well

Well the only thing im scared or worried about, is spending money on a new "weaker" ball ( to todays standards ) That really wont react much different to my black ice once I dull it down a bit, Like I was saying otherwise ill just have a new version of what I already have, And I think if I polished the Black ice, it would make a good 3rd game ball possibly, or for light to medium oil conditions.. Yes / no?

I wasn't suggesting you go as weak as the other poster. I think something around the bash/freeze might be too similar. For the kind of shape you like, a dimension would be good, or a full swing. If you like to see a more gradual arc, then you would probably be more suited to something solid, rather than the evil siege for example.

when you say solid, do you mean the coverstock? , Just not being polished?

Reactive resin balls have three subcategories, solid, pearlized, and particle.  The pearlized coverstocks have an additive that helps them go longer before breaking and the particle coverstocks have particles added that give more friction with the lane surface, causing them to break earlier.  So, in general, pearlized coverstocks are for dryer conditions and particle coverstocks are for oilier conditions.  Solid coverstocks are more appropriate for medium conditions, but can cover a wider range with sanding or polishing.  --  JohnP
