After the thumb hole has been plugged is it ok to drill into the plug.
Will the remaining plug material be strong enoungh to stay in the ball?
The ball had a thumb insert in it and it was removed.

It's OK, but for insurance I would suggest using a thumb slug or sleeve for a little extra strength. -- JohnP
