Sarge Easter and ring finger injury
« on: March 14, 2010, 09:19:46 AM »
I recently had a bad incident with my release where my ring finger never cleared the ball and was hyper-extended backwards. At the time I had severe bruising and swelling of that ring fingertip knuckle, and i've never seemed to be able to bowl the same. Would switching to the sarge easter grip help alleviate this pain and stop it from happening again?

I dont have an answer to your question, and can only think of how painful that must have been.....

May I ask how you werent able to release the ball ?

I actually bent my knee too much and was lower on the approach then normal. The ball contacted the lane too early on the downswing and jammed upwards on my hand, and my ring finger stayed in on release. Ball kept going, finger bent backwards as I lifted upwards. I actually though I might have broken it at first it was that painful.

This is only my .02 but I would go see your local Pro Shop and explain to them what had happened and you are wondering if trying this drilling will help at all.

They might even suggest something else.

How long has it been since this happened ....enough time for it to heal ?

It's been about a week. I've lost quite a bit of flexibility in that knuckle, even after a week of icing as much as possible.

I had a broken ring finger which was broken about a half inch from the tip. I was bowling for a while with just 2 fingers, leaving my ring out of the hole.  I inquired about the Sarge Easter drilling, and figured that it would Not aggravate my injury after reading about it here.  I asked my driller, who uses this drilling, and he also felt it would be ok, so I gave it a try.
Bad move.  Because the ring finger hole is a standard drilled hole, it actually caused me to reinjure my finger as it took longer for that finger to exit the finger hole. Didn't work for me, but I can't say it would or wouldn't work for you.

Try a house ball first with a standard conventional grip and see how it feels. If it takes away the stress and pain from that finger it may be worth trying the sarge grip. If it doesn't then you didn't have to spend any money drilling anything.

May need to talk with a Doctor as well and see if maybe you just need to give more time for the injury to heal.

If you do decide to try Sarge Easter, go to Brunsnick's website and read his article on it so it's done right.  You need to use quite a bit of reverse pitch in the RF so that it basically "goes along for the ride".  --  JohnP
