As far as the depth goes, does a commercial bowling ball drill press read from the tip of the drill bit or the part of the drill bit that actually begins cutting the hole size you want?  I notice my press hits the ball at 1/2" with the drill bit.  It doesn't actually start drilling the size of the hole until I get 1" down on my readout.
