Home drill presses...thoughts

Ive been drilling for well over 15yrs now and im looking to setup a home shop to drill my stuff, it gets old asking to use other peoples drill presses. Been looking at presses online. What specs do i look for for the press. i cant seem to find motor HP on the innovative, Jayhawk website on what their presses use. Is 3/4hp motor too small or can i get away with that. Been looking at Northern Tools 12" table top press and some others but just want to see if its powerful enough. I dont want to spend $1800 if its just for me. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you hear about the KMT setup?   If you're just drilling your own,  this may be a more viable option for you.   I've heard a lot of good things about it.

I have one. It works quite well and remarkably consistent. The only part you need to supply is a good strong drill with a 3/8" chuck; an electric seems much better than any battery one for this purpose.

The only problem is the set-up is for your own set pitches; it's fixed: one for your thumb and one for your fingers. (Since I only use 1/4" pitch for both thumb and fingers, all I have to change is the drill bit (I use inserts; so I have one 1 1/8" bit for thumb and one 31/32" bit for the fingers, both supplied by KMT.) To change pitches you need a new piece where the angle is different. Not necessary,of course, if you stick your fixed pitch for thumb and fingers.

The KMT promotional videos show the installation for a Grip Loc thumb.  Can you do a Turbo?

If you're asking me, I only use a plain urethane oval insert. I don't use any of the switch grips or IT slugs. I'd be surprised if it couldn't do it. You'd have to ask the KMT guy to know for sure.

I have an upright press with a jig and bit set for sale, where are you located. I'm in ohio.

Im kind of skeptical on that thing. Id much rather just get a press and drill. i know its an investment and willing to exchange getting new stuff all the time to get a drill and be able to drill whenever i want in the privacy of my garage.

If your that skeptical about the KMT contact the guy (sorry, can't remember his name) and see if he will send you his sample for you to try.  I tested it before it got listed on Bowlers Paradise because we were skeptical.  The KMT will drill holes as clean or cleaner than a mill.  You can buy extra pitch plates to have different pitches and just get the size bits you need.

I heard of a local bowler who has KMT and when I first of this, he was drilling for himself only. Few years later, I heard he drills for two other people, friends of his.

I think this a good Idea, cost is much much much lower than a mill, especially if you're just drilling for yourself.

If bought 3 to 4 balls a year, I would buy myself one. Or drill for friends, but they buy their own plates.
