Simple question.. looking for simple answer??
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:00:48 PM »
I have a lefty that comes to the shop and he is a High Rev. PLayer with a Full Roller Track. He is very successful with the drilling of cg in palm Pin directly across on midline.

PROBLEM: I punched him up a NOMAD and it is way to strong (we tried coverstock adjustments- still too much)  I would like to punch an X-hole in the ball and get it slightly negative side.. Where does the hole go for a Full Roller??

I only have 2 bowlers that I drill full roller layouts for and the other has absolutly no hand, so Im not used to seeing this everyday

Per Ebonite''''s drill sheet:

DRILLING #11 FULL ROLLER
Ball Choice: pin out 1 1/2” to 4”, all top weights
Reaction: 3 3/8” from grip center
Length…3 Backend…10 Overall Hook…10
Lane Condition: Medium to heavy oil, maximum hook.
Pin Placement: 3 3/8” from grip center in an 8:30 direction from the CG.
CG Placement: Near center of span (location will depend on pin out distance).
Balance Hole: If needed, place on negative axis point (8:30 direction from grip center).

Reaction: 1 1/2” from grip center
Length…1 Backend…8 Overall Hook…8
Lane Condition: Medium oil with carrydown.
Pin Placement: 1 1/2” from grip center in an 8:30 direction from the CG.
CG Placement: Near the grip center (location will depend on pin out
distance).
Balance Hole: If needed, on the Positive Axis Point to 1/2 oz. positive
side.

When you say the ball is too strong, what do you mean?  Is it breaking too early and burning out, or is it too jumpy on the back end, or something else?  And how far is the pin from the grip center?  --  JohnP

its hooking way too much in the backend (uncontrollable for him)
pin is 3" right of center of grip on midline

But, the pin is probably in too strong of a position, flaring too much and creating too much backend. You can try drilling the hole straight through the pin, drilling it to maximum negative side. This should also cut down on the flare.

He probably has good speed and revs, which is why changing the statics and/or cutting down the flare may not help much in this case. But, you should see some difference.

If the hole doesn't help much, you'll need to re-drill the bals with a weaker pin location that cuts down the flare of the ball. Placing the pin closer to the palm or closer to is axis will do the trick. http://www.lane1bowling.com/tech/drill_guide.html Good luck. =:^D

If it helps heres from the rotogrip drill sheet

Extra Hole Placement :
A) On the PAP : Reduces flare and smoothes the backend re a c t i o n

B) Inside the PAP: Extra Holes placed inside the PAP or
VAL (vertical axis line) enhance the flare potential

C) Past the PAP: Extra holes placed past the PAP or VAL enhances
the flare potential, but is not recommended for high REV players
because it may flare over this balance hole

+1 to what T-GOD said.

Here's one more thought, and I'm strictly speculating - hope someone has tried this and can give a more concrete opinion.  How about a Rico layout?  Pin at grip center would put it in his track which should mellow the ball down considerable.  I would use the minimum balance hole possible and hope that the flare would stay inverted.  --  JohnP

You may need to go out on the lanes to map out the track and flare pattern to find a safe zone to place the hole.
