I am going to take 4 of the same ball (a budget ball actually) with various pin distances and layouts.
My thoughts are to take 4 mild cored, solid resin covered balls like Purple/ Black Power Grooves or Red/Black Bashes, blue/green Jazz's or similar with these layouts.....
#1....5-1/2 x 5 pin high
#2....4x4 stacked
#3....2x4
#4....5x4 pin under
What are your thoughts on layouts and surface prep? See my profile for personal stats and normal house conditions.

If you can get a hold of 4 Blue Vibes it would work great for your experiment. The BV in box condition works pretty well on light oil patterns. When the cover is brought down to say 1000 grit it works very well on heavier conditions. If you can't find anymore BV's the go with the Cherry Vibe.
I also suggest drilling two of the 4 balls with the same exact layout. This way you can have one of them dull and the other polished. I would use your favorite layout for this. Then drill the other two with different layouts.
I have done this experiment on a few different bowling balls and had very good success.
Raw Hammer Doom (4 ball arsenal)
Blue Vibe (3 ball arsenal)
No Mercy (3 ball arsenal)
I suggest not using a strong heavy oil type ball for this experiment. The heavy oil type balls don't work very well on the lighter conditions even when polished.

Yes chitown I had figured on using budget type balls....in fact our house conditions lend themselves to the "budget" balls better than high performance stuff. I was seriously considering the red/ black Bash or the Purple/Black PowerGroove, Jazz, Tropical Storm or Street Rod.

You may want to consider the Pluto for your experiment also. IMO, it can handle quite a bit of oil with the right layout and surface. It can also do the same for lighter volumes (not dry). It's a very versatile, budget priced solid reactive that I think would be perfect for you.

Again it's just an experiment and I figured I can get like 4 PG's for around $250 shipped....
Besides I'd love to spank some guys in league that belong to the "buy the ball of the month but have no clue how to throw it" club using what is typically classified as a kids or woman's ball :-)
Any more opinions guys? How about teh layouts? Are they good for such an experiemtn? What should I change?
I AM going to do this...just need to iron out the kinks.

If you bowl on house shots, what's the point of carrying more than 3 including plastic?
If you're set on doing all the same ball, I would suggest putting close to the same drill on each one, and just altering the surface. Maybe 4000, 2000, 1000.
Doug you've been around long enough to know ball react pretty close to the same on a house shot anyways, so at least the different surfaces would give you an early, longer, longest look.

FYI The Power Grooves are PK 17 in general.
If you decide to use balls like the pG and the Jazz there's one thing you should note. Since they are derivatives of the pancake core (they are no longer pancakes, as they have plenty of flare), there seems to be one factor that still in effect. If you put the pin on the track side of the center of the grip, it will raise your track slightly to a lot. I have one PG with the pin under the middle finger and its track is raised about 1" from my normal track. Since my normal PAP is 5" over this is not a problem. It could depending on how high your track is with high flaring balls.
As far as surface goes, you should add the Power Groove Black and Purple model, since that is solid PK17. All the others are pearl, as far as I know.
As far as the Jazz goes, I understand they are actually Solid Super-Flex, not pearlized! Keep those ideas in mind. I think they'll help.

I agree that a lot of solids tend to be a little more versatile but that's not the case with the Blue Vibe. The Blue Vibe is one of the most versatile bowling balls i've ever owned.
If i'm not mistaking the Blue Vibe is not considered a pearl even though it's polished. If I rememeber correctly the BV uses the cut throat coverstock and is not peralized.
