Changing Pitches 2 lower tilt and raise track?
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:26:31 AM »
I been working on staying behind the ball and getting my thumb out of the ball quicker to lower my tilt and possibly raising my track. We have come to believe that possibly my pitches are off. I've also heard that changing the pitches in our thumb and fingers can affect the way you roll the ball. Anyone agree on this.I'm right handed. My pitches are

        (Left Finger)        (right finger)
        0(F/R)               0(F/R)
        3/8 Left             3/8 right

                     Thumb
                    1/8 reverse
                    1/8 right

Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking maybe pitching thumb more to the left as it feel a slight bit unnatural.

Moving everything a 1/8 left on my ball helped lower my track away from the
fingers and thumb. Went from 3/8 left finger to a 1/2 and 3/8 right finger to
1/4 right. Always pitched thumb an 1/8 left. It felt the same since they all moved
you could also offset your thumb like 3/8 too the right and keep the same pitches

Yeah i want to get my track closer to the thumb. but every time i bring up offset thumb to my ball driller they say "its not offset it just looks that way its really a longer or shorter ring finger or something" whatever but Mo Pinnel said the pitches can affect the tilt on a ball so thats why i'm thinking this should be my next option.

I think the key for you is how flexible is your thumb. You should not have any problems in going 1/8 left and 1/8 reverse in the thumb pitches. You should be able to stay behind the ball better with the 1/8 left lateral pitch in the thumb. If you have a thumb slug this is easy to change and not have to plug the thumb hole. My son uses the 1/8 left and 1/8 reverse and I was able to try it out before I made the change. I did not use the 1/8 reverse in my set up due to the fact that I was coming out of the ball way too quick. You already use the 1/8 reverse so it should not be a problem for you. Make a change on one of your older balls and see what happens. Then you will know how the changes will affect your roll and release.

When you go to right pitch in the thumb and 3/8 in both fingers, you are "rolling" your hand under the ball which will promote getting around it for more tilt and/or rotation.  Like someone else suggested, go to left in the thumb and 1/4 left in the middle finger and 5/8 in the ring finger and that should help you to raise the track.

ALSO.....check your span.  If the span is shorter than it should be, that can also help to promote getting around the ball as well.

+1.

Try 1/8 left lateral in the thumb, with 1/8 reverse. This assumes that your span is correct, so check that first.

I went from 0 lateral and 5/16 reverse to 14/4 left and 1/16 reverse. it changed my axis from 4 7/8 over  1/4 up to 5 3/8 over and 1/8 up. I also went from 70-80 degrees axis rotation to  40-50 degrees. It made a large difference in ball roll and reaction for me. I now am able to make hand position adjustments have a greater effect on my reaction than before

If you want to get your thumb out sooner(right handed) try somewhere around 1/2 reverse, and 1/4 away to start. The more you go in those directions the sooner your thumb will start to come out of the ball.
