How do you calibrate a kaufman scale?
« on: March 01, 2009, 05:16:33 AM »
Just bought a used Kaufman scale that has been in storage for a few years and I would like to know if they are calibrated correct. How would I go about checking them?

First, be sure the balance is level using the bubble level on the base and the adjusting screws.  Then remove all the weights, for a Kaufman I think (but am not sure, I have the AMF version and you don't remove the hanger with it) that includes removing the hanger.  Set both sliding weights to zero and adjust the knurled weight adjustment knob so it balances.  I don't know of any checks other than these.  --  JohnP

Thanks John. So on the Kaufman I remove the weights and the hook both?

I just tried it with all weights and the hook removed. It balanced out perfect. Thank-you!

Yep, balance the level buble, remove all the weighs, set both scales too zero, and adjust the tare so it is level too balance.
The only thing that I would check or replace on an used kaufman is the bearings.
They usually only last 2 - 5 years but can easily be replaced.
One can tell if they are going bad if you can manually position the scale off of balance with it not moving back too balance, if that makes sence. lol

I have the AMF Accu-Balance and you'd better take the counterpoise weight rack off to calibrate it cause it weighs 5 pounds.

Greg, yep your ( and mine ) style one has to remove the "weight holder", cylinder type weights. AMF also made a style that looks like a Kaufman, weights hang on a small pole style holder. I think that's the style JohnP is talking about.

Part number for the bearings is 15-5915
The pivot pins go into the bearings.

Thanks

I have a Kauffman as well and I would replace the pivot pins also with the bearings.

How do I tell whether I have to remove the hanger or not to calibrate my AMF scale? Also I assume I set the slide weights to 0 and move the stationary pin up or down?
Thanks for the help.
Joe

Yes, mine has the pole and pan style holder with an 8 lb, two 3 lb, and a 1 lb weight that have a slot that fits the pole to allow the weights to set on the pan.  It balances at zero with the weights off but the pole and pan left on.  --  JohnP
