Since pin to PAP distance is kept constant for the test, and PAP is on the VAL by definition, I am having trouble visualizing how pin to VAL distances are being varied for the test. Can someone help me out here?

Talking about the pin buffer distance here (in Storm's terms).. basically how far the pin is away from the VAL.  If you take your PAP (which is on your VAL) and draw a circle around it of a given distance (say 3.5"), placing the pin anywhere on that circle will give you a 3.5" pin to PAP distance.  However, the pin will be different distances from the VAL (or if you choose to think about it, different heights above the mid-line).

I think that's the traditional way to look at it.  If you want to keep the pin a certain distance from the PAP, you have no choice but to move it towards the VAL if you want to raise it.  Closer to VAL==higher above the midline, and on the VAL is as high as you can go.  The traditional "higher above midline" usually means length and snap, so I would pin closer to VAL to be the same.

Interesting article....

That illustration at the end is really misleading. Isn't the pin to val distance = the length of the perpendicular line drawn from VAL to pin(shortest distance)? Literally what Storm calls pin buffer?

And the dotted line illustrated is probably in actual fact the pin to pap line.

I agree. Looks like something that's supposed to be pin-to-PAP rather than pin-to-VAL.

Yes, the initial image was misleading. I did place a disclaimer at the end of the article.  This morning I had more time to create a more accurate image.  If you return and few the image you will see the improved graphic. As a busy bowling coach, I wanted to share the information as soon as I could write it up.  But, I didn't have the time to create a proper image. But, today, I had some additional time to create an improved image.

Good job Joe!

I'll make this pin to val distance variation my next project... I'd imagine you'd need considerably longer pins for the 0 to 1 inch buffers. Also, I guess an important point that they used 90 deg layout is that with small pap-pin-mb angles, the size of/bal hole will affect the outcome.

Do you(everyone) think that the pin buffer has greater effect on ball reaction or the size/depth of the bal hole? or vice versa?
