How much difference
« on: December 02, 2003, 01:31:35 AM »
What would be an average difference in length would 1 inch diference in a drilling be?

For example a 5 x 3 versus 4 x 2 would you say that the 4 x 2 would start up earlier by 1 foot, two feet, 3 feet.....

I was thinking that once you have a reaction that you like could you make it earlier or later by a modifying the drilling.

I was wondering if there was a basic average that you could set up a ball for.

What are your thoughts?

Doc, a 1" move between 4-5" will not be the same length difference as a 1" move between 5-6" or 6-7". I.E. 4 x 3 vs 3 x 2 will be less noticeable than a 6 1/2 x ? vs a 5 1/2 x ? Moves between the 2" and 4 3/4" mark will be the least noticeable. Can you follow what I'm trying to say..? =:^D

T-GOD - Thanks for the reply.  I understand that there is a difference.  I was suspecting this difference would be shaped on a bell curve versus exponentially.  I know there are a lot more factors involved like speed, rev rate, rotation and tilt as well as core and coverstock.  I was just wondering what a basic average could one see if you had made a change in the pattern.  I was using the 5 x 3 versus 4 x 2 as an example.

I was looking at the possibility of setting up a second ball to start up earlier but have the same look on the lane and was wondering how much change in layout would there have to be to get this change in feet.

I hope you or others out there could help.

The biggest issue is flare potential.  If you are talking about a low flare ball, then the difference between a 5x3 versus a 4x2 isn't as great as it would be with a high flaring ball.

A good ball to think about is the old double-puck Ebonite Stinger.  That ball had a very high RG and would go very long with a 5" pin.  But it also had a big differential and a stronger drilling (in powerful hands) would create so much flare that it would kill the length.  (This example comes from a personal bad experience]

With that said, I think on a medium flare ball, you are on the right track.  I'm sure you'll have to combine the drill change with surface tweaks, but you can get there.
