I just received a ball, theoretically good specs, with a 3 inch pin and 3.6 oz top. I would say 1.6 is on the low side, and 3 is good, but how much is too much and what, if any, is the net result of top in today's technology?

Signature? I don't need no stinking signature...

i dont even know why you ask "how much is too much top", heck i prefer topLESS

4ounces is enough for me.

There I've said and that was politically correct.
Now from my testing.
Balls with 4 ounces of top weight have a tremendous amount of reaction compared to the same ball drilled the same way with 2 ounces of starting top weight.
For league conditions 3.5 to 4 ounces of top weight often give a very powerful reaction at the pins.
For tricy conditions where predictability is key, using balls with close to 0 top weight after drilling seems to give a more smooth and predictable move than the above balls.
Often balls that start at 2.2 ounces and if drilled with typical finger and thumb sizes and weightholes on pap will supply this type of near 0 top weight after drilling roll. Very even and smooth. Of course this in comparison to a ball of same manufacture and pin out and drilling but compared to a starting 4.0 ounce top weight.
But also remember this! Ceegeenooomadeh!

PS makes a big difference. High tops for blended leagues.
Lower tops hard transitions on sides or back. High tops often a nono on World team challenge, sport and pba type shots. Can be corrected with weightholes on PAP though.

Just for the record, LL must be talking about top weight on the undrilled ball. Maximum legal top weight on a drilled ball is 3 oz. -- JohnP
