How much of your hand is on the ball
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:59:04 AM »
When my hand is in the ball and I am holding it the ball rests/touches.. the four pads below each of my fingers .. and the large pad at the base of my thumb.. there is a decent size void in the middle and bottom left of my palm(looking at it while holding the ball in my hand.)..

just putting my thumb in the ball and trying to lay my hand and palm completely flat over the ball seems like it would be nice to have the ball in contact with my entire hand.. I know the thumb pitches would have to be tweaked a ton and the thumb set up offset..

also, I'm interested in what this does for the release, track and how the ball rolls.. as it looks like it would cause the ball to come off the hand a little differently..

Looking at the ball again.. I would say during my swing none of the ball's weight is on the pad under my pinky..

After I've fit a customer I do a final check by having him grip the ball and hold it hanging by his side.  A standard pencil should slide between the palm and the ball with just a little force required to push it in.  If no force is required, the grip is too short.  If a lot of force is required, the grip is too long.  --  JohnP

For me, the majority of the ball weight sits on the pad of my palm just below the index finger.

I would say it is there and on the pad at the base of my thumb..

I would find a different driller if I were you.  Not having the ball layed out according to your PAP can possibly make a big difference in ball reaction, and to leave it scuffed up when it is easy to clean up shows he didn't really care too much.  It sounds like he's one of those types that automatically "just knows" what is best for everyone without putting out the effort to do it right.  Get a recommendation for a GOOD driller/pro-shop in your area, and work with them next time, being sure that they measure your PAP no matter what.

Every shop has its own policy.  If you were my customer I would fix it at no charge.  How the repair is done depends on how much the thumb has to be moved.  If it's just a small amount the driller can probably drill the hole out for a 1 3/8" slug.  If it's more he'll have to plug it.  --  JohnP

That sounds pretty normal to me J_W 73.

For me the pad below my index, ring, middle fingers, the base of my thumb are all that touch the ball.  Pretty heavy on the index finger, not so much on the pinky.  None of my hand on the pinky side touches the ball.  When I want to feel more on the ball, I spread my pinky out wide and press the tip on the ball a little more.
