Plug Cutters

I used my new one today for the first time and it wasn't quite what I was expecting.  First I noticed it was far from sharp, actually very dull.  I understand they aren't supposed to be really sharp, but I'm talking about like a butter knife.  When I cut with it, it did it's job (Kinda slow)and left the plug material (Ebonite ultra clear) rough, somewhat pitted or tiny chips.  After finishing it with a taxi block it was good.  The second ball I cut, I came as close to the ball as I could, until the cutter hit the ball.  No scratches on the ball, but I still got the rough pitted surface on the plug material.  Since I was so close on the second ball the Taxi block did not remove all of this.  I just wanted to know what to expext from some of you who use plug cutters, Thanks

with a plug cutter i noticed the same results....rough pitted area.  i thought it was me not mixing/stirring correctly, until i tried the local shops router and the results were night and day.  but i can live with the little bit of roughness if it saves me money.

This is not due to the plug cutter being dull, it is the exact opposite. New plug cutters are beyond sharp, and the reason as to why you have those little cut marks in the plug is because it is too sharp. The cutter works perfectly when cutting urethane and vinyl inserts because they are harder, but with the plug it leaves rough cut marks. To combat this...leave a little bit of plug raised above the surface so that when you sand it down it will be smooth. Another option is to go a bit slower as you get to the bottom of the plug.

the plug cutter is not sharp at all, far from too sharp, as I stated in the origional post.  It's about as sharp as a butter knife.

Before finishing it down with the CAB, use a bevel knife to smooth out the plug.  But be careful not to use to much pressure with the bevel knife.

That's why I like a router. Easier, nicer finish, less time spent. JMO

I use the Jayhawk plug cutter. It is super sharp. And yes you need to spend a little time with the bevel knife to get out the pits in the plug before sanding and finishing/polish

It's interesting you bring this up. We just got a new press in our shop and when browsing through the set of new bits, I pulled the plug cutter out, and found the blade actually has rounded edges. I mean, its obviously brand new, but it is not sharp at all. The edges are literally rounded. We got this press from innovative, where as our other came from jayhawk, and their plug cutter is razor sharp. The new one cuts slugs fine, but have yet to use it for actually cutting plug. I have never seen one like this, but I am guessing it is to help prevent from cutting into the ball, considering it still cuts slugs fine.

thats the same cutter i have, from innovative.  havent seen or used the jayhawk one.  innovative redesigned the cutter to have a cleaner cut without marking the ball.
