I always hear people saying I want a ball for medium or Heavy oil specifically in order to build up their arsenal. But what has always made much more sense to me is having at least 2 balls for every volume of oil. One that will have a smoother reaction and one that will have a skid/snap reaction. That way you can adjust better to the lanes in transition. For me this means Symmetrical balls on the smoother end and asymmertical on the skid/snap end. Who else does it this way? And how do you go about building your arsenal?

Building an arsenal will yield you many different opinions. I feel 4 balls is a perfect number for most bowlers. 1 for heavy, 2 for med, 1 for dry. With the 2 med balls have one drilled for control and the other for opening up the lane.
Well I have done an experimental arsenal that i'm using right now.
Heavy oil: Animal(pin 4 3/8 from pap, MB close to my VAL)
Med/heavy: Raw Hammer Doom(dulled 600 grit, stacked leverage)
Med oil: Raw Hammer Doom(box condition, 5.5" to pap above bridge, cg to 1oz and no balance hole).
dry: Raw Hammer Doom(polished with delayed reaction, 5.5" from pap above bridge, cg to 1oz and no balance hole)
I know most will think i'm nuts for using 3 of the same ball in my arsenal. I like it because it works well. Awesome ball and can cover many conditions with cover changes and layouts. The only thing I would change with what I have done is with the dry lane ball. I would drill it with the pin above but at 6" from pap. Other than that it's a great 4 ball arsenal for me.
The other way of looking at building an arsenal is with 6 balls. 3 balls for each amount of oil heavy, med, light all drilled lable. Then 3 balls covering the same amount of oil heavy, med and light all drilled with a power stacked layout. This 6 should cover all situations.
My personal opinion is 4 balls can cover almost anything most bowlers will face. This way all 4 balls will get some palying time and wont be boat anchors to carry around. Plus you really can eliminate over lap by only using 4.

I carry 4 bowling balls, which covers all the points you talked about in your original post
One for Heavy Oil and a Hard Snap
One for Heavy Oil and a Smooth Arc
One for Light Oil and a Hard Snap
One for Light Oil and a Smooth Arc
I dont see another condition you would need to factor in.

Steel 10 awesome post reply. Enjoyed reading it and can tell picking an arsenal can be a tough thing to do.

I think is also depends on your style. I agree with chitown, but I only carry 4. I am more down and in, but moving in if it's to dry will allow me to cut down to 3 balls.
I currently carry
XXcel
Hawg Wild
Xcel
working on selling the Xcel, and replacing it with a Doom . As some have said you need several balls, but I've been watching the 'test' chitown has done with the Doom and , depending on the ball, I do think you could use the same ball, drilled a bit differently and cover adjusted, to make a nice 3 maybe 4 ball.
If I get the courage to try that, mine will most likely be:
Xxcel
Hawg Wild
Hawg Wild ( different drill/cover )

Two balls on league night and four balls for tournaments.
League Night I know my RS-X and my Vibe will cover anything I see in league.
For tournaments I use:
Heavy Oil: Silver Streak Particle 800gs drilled Stacked Leverage
Medium Oil smooth: RS-X 1000gs/hand polished drilled 4" x 4.5"
Medium Snap: Solid Uranium highly polished drilled pin above ring CG stacked.
Light Oil: Big Hit Solid, OOB pin above bridge CG in palm
