How to Drill a ball to roll out/burn up early
« on: December 10, 2010, 06:31:39 AM »
A bowling friend of mine was encountering dryer conditions where his normal equipment would over-react and the bowler is not consistently capable of playing deep. So he had a ball intentionally drilled to burn up in the heads so that it was "rolling out" by the time it was getting to the back end. What type of ball would be appropriate and what is the correct drill for a excessive revs/lower ball speed (16 mph) player? I'm considering this same kind of approach to dryer conditions. or at least having it in my bag as an option.  I wanted to get some opinions of the people here instead of just copying what he did since I have different revs/speed/release etc.  I was thinking something like a Virtual Gravity since it rolls so early but might have enough carry on backend?

Layout and ball won't matter.  Just scuff something to 360 abralon.  You'll be GOLDEN

IMHO....use a very tight VAL angle....25 deg. or less, seems to get the ball into more of foward roll off the pattern.. Works for me, PAP is 4 3/4> 0 up/down...

on asymmetrical use small VAL angles 20-25 deg and smaller MB angles 25-40 depending on the lane condition..
When the ball hits friction it will want to use up its energy very fast and try to roll forward.

Longer pin to paps could help as well but that also depends on the persons axis of rotation degree.

On symetrical.. try something like a double thumb drilling

but I think you can achieve the same thing with any ball by adjusting the surface like suggested..

There is a lot of difference between rolling out and a hook set reaction - carry being one of them - just my 2 cents worth

Before getting a new ball just scuff an old pearl ball and give it a try. I have an old Agent at 500ab that I use for this exact purpose. Since it's pearl it still clears the front of the lane and then it picks up the midlane, rolls and does nothing on the back. It's pretty much my bail out ball if nothing else is working.

Rico FTW. Early rolling, controlled backend. Throw it on a weak ball with some surface. No way that ball would be able to overreact.

I have an OUTBURST drilled 40 x 2 x 20 at box 1000 grit. Not enough oil to get much practice with it but it rolls very early and is super smooth on the backend. The current surface is too strong to pitch the ball out very much. Mostly straighter angles through the front just because it rolls so early...

If the problem is too much sideroll...he needs to learn to play deeper.  If not he will always be giving up carry to the field because his ball will hit like a wet marshmallow...or learn to take some of the sideroll out.

He could try a 2inch Pin to Pap drilling, with the CG @ 2 - 3 inches from his pap....

Buy a Brunswick ball, bowl with it for three months, the balls reaction will disappear, PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Preferably a Ultra Zone or Scorchin' Inferno.

I know you said that in jest.....but I use a Rico'd Total Inferno, scuffed, for that very purpose! Works well for me.
