it is sad to say but I have almost no clue in how bowling balls are drilled...meaning i don't know where things should be, CG, Pin, PAP, etc., to do certain things with the ball....i am not a newbee bowler...average around 220, but want to take my game to the next level and would like to learn a little more about drilling so i am not given the runaround by pro shop guys thinking i dont know what i am doing....can anybody point me in the right drection into the education of drilling, web sites and such or give me some basics to start with???

sorry to sound so out of tune...but how does the PAP determine how you drill a ball???

Well, depending on where your PAP is, and what you want the ball to do, you place the Pin/CG/Mass Bias accordingly. Everything is in relation to PAP.

Don't feel bad, everybody has to start somewhere. To start with, pap is an acronym for positive axis point. This is a measurement that is different for each individual bowler and is the point on the ball that is the center of the rotation of the ball.

In simpler terms, if you put a rod through the ball and left it sticking out on both sides with one end on your pap, it would appear that the ball was rotating around a stationary point.

The distance you put this "pap" from your grip, in relation to the gripping holes, is one of the major factors in determining the balls reaction.

Go to www.rollriteproshop.co.uk and check under Marios secrets for much more detailed information as to the effects of pin placements, mass bias, and all other factors in building ball reactions.

First, go to the Unofficial FAQ stickie post at the top of the Miscellaneous Forum. A lot of great information there, including several ways to locate your PAP. As far as your PAP goes, you should be able to get that info from your pro shop guy.

k, i understand how to find PAP on ball that is already drilled by looking at the flare rings...but what about on a ball that has not been drilled

once you master the basics the morich site has extremely good info on the dual angle method. you have to be experienced to understand it though. im on my 5th time reading it and i still only kinda get it.

To locate the PAP for the layout you want, you need at least two parameters. The simplest to explain is pin to PAP and pin to cg (or MB) distances. For example, if you want a 5" pin to PAP and a 4" pin to cg, you simply locate the point on the ball that meets those requirements. Then, once you have the PAP located you work backwards using your PAP horizontal and vertical components to find the grip center, choosing it to place the pin where you want it vertically - above or below the fingers. The other techniques (drill angle, double angle, pin buffer, etc.) do the same thing, but are more difficult to explain. -- JohnP
