how to drill and top weight and pin position?
« on: October 04, 2004, 08:09:57 PM »
posted this in storm forum probably should of posted it here instead.

Thinking about getting a storm x-factor ace.

I haven't bowled seriously in years and don't know much about bowling ball drilling. my old ball is a reactive resin and in high school i'd throw it 20 mph down the 1-2 board and hook into the pocket. I would throw it harder depending on lane conditions to keep it from over hooking. Im trying to slow it way down and learn to bowl with the arc type hook instead of straight down and then just cut into pocket.

I plan to use it as my only strike ball but I will probably use my old ball for spares alot or in really dry conditions if it calls for it but my point is my new ball will be my main ball.

how should I drill it? I'd have to say I'm 14-15mph speed and low revs but I'm just starting back. I plan to order a ball online and have it drilled locally. and I noticed you can pick a pin position and top weight. So I don't know what to get.

I don't plan on getting lessons or having a pro watch me bowl. So Hopefully I can get some good information here.

I know of a good driller locally but I would like to know how I want it drilled before I go so that its not just the decisions of one proshop guy and me not knowing what it is.

thanks

Klep – It is hard to say without seeing you throw. I’m assuming you are a ¾ roller (track outside the thumb). With your lack of revs I would lean towards stronger drillings. Look for a ball with a 3 to 4 inch pin they are the most versatile for drilling and around 2 to 3 oz of top.

If you have trouble getting the ball to hook get a low RG ball with an aggressive cover. Then I would drill it with the pin at 1:30 and kick the cg out. I might even use a stacked leverage drilling (3 ½ x 3 1/2).

If your ball starts hooking too soon then go towards a higher RG pearl coverstock and not kick the cg out so far.
