How would you drill this?
« on: November 10, 2003, 10:27:20 PM »
I have a customer who bowls without his thumb.  He tracks up over the finger holes.  His bow tie is up and to the left of his middle finger and flare pattern typically clips the ring finger as it flares toward the thumb hole.

He currently is using label drilled balls (no one has ever checked his track).  This is pretty close to a 4 inch pin to PAP distance.  He is using an X Factor, Blade Reactive, and Sling Blade, all with similar drills.  This equipment seems to roll well for him, but they all tend to be very snappy.  He won a Crunch Time and I am looking to drill it up when he gets it in.

Now to my question...  Any suggestions on laying this out for a less flippy reaction?  I will add a little surface and light polish to the ball.  However, I'm wondering if I want to give it more like a 135 degree drilling to help...  Thoughts?  Let me know if I missed anything (I'm sure I did).

Oh yeah, conditions...  Moderate (don't have exact volume) oil up front and in the middle with less volume outside.  Length is 35-40 feet or so.  Lanes are synthetics with clean backends.

Update.  After bowling beside this guy tonight, I took another look at his equipment.  His track has change a bit from the ball I looked at the other day.  His track is actually to the right of his ring finger.  It is tracking right over the pin.  Since this is quite a bit different from my previous post, I figured I would give you an update.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the responses.

Actually, no I am not stretching things at all.  His track is right of his ring finger.  He does not throw a back up ball (although good assumption from what the info I provided).  He has about 1.5 inches of track flare right over the pin.  He is right handed and has strong ball movement (right to left in 1-3 pocket) down the lane, as you would expect from someone with high revs.

I am having him try some other equipment layouts to check into this.  Since it is easy for him to try out other layouts (angles and pin positions) I am going to try that.  And, KOTM, I think you are correct, proper cover prep is necessary.

The comment on learning to bowl with his thumb is well noted!  Thanks again.

Use a close pin, like a 1-2 and drill the fingers directly into the CG with the pin at 2 o clock.  This should move the bowtie off of the fingers and right side and give a long smooth reaction.
