Three Finger Holes
« on: December 14, 2007, 09:51:34 PM »
I have been having some trouble with my hand, and my doctor (who happens to be a bowler) has told me that I have carpal tummel syndrome. He said that I can continue to play, but to reduce the effect I should ask my driller about adding another finger hole. I have done a little research on this, but wondered if anyone could give me some idea of how this is done, what the effects of adding the third finger is and what effect this has n layouts etc?

You could do that, or you could drop in ball weight.
Add a hole for your index finger if you do, i have no idea on how and where to put it though

I was having trouble with my release so I had my driller put in a pinky hole.  It does change the way the ball reacts.

Interesting, haven't heard of anyone use a pinky hole before.

Had both carpal & cupil tunnel surgery done 7 months ago tomorrow.
It was getting so bad I could not hold & use a hammer or a screw driver let alone write my name & tie my shoes.
Doc allowed me bowl 3 weeks after surgery.
Doc told me he has cut on a lot of bowlers over the years & he even runs a ad in the sports section in the city paper from time to time.
The elbow were they cut the bone out still smarts like H#** but every week it improves a little by little.
Don't wait to long to have the tests done & surgery if your doc recomends it.
I had spinal fusion 2 years before this last " cutting ".
The electric test & written report indicated one huge problem back then & the doc, tester never bothered to verbaly report it to me.
Best hope for me now for recovery is maybe 75% due to the fact over 2 years had passed & this stuff does not heal itself.
Yes it is like learning to bowl all over again as I now have feeling in my fingers for the 1st time in many years.

I believe you can have up to 5 holes for the grip. Then you can also have a balance hole. I am not sure on the vent holes.

From Bowl.com Drilling Specifications

quote:
Holes:

The following limitations shall govern the drilling of holes in the ball:

1. Holes or indentations, not to exceed five (5), for gripping purposes. The player is not required to use all the holes in any specific delivery, but they must be able to demonstrate that each hole can reasonably be used for gripping purposes. Any hole that cannot be reasonably shown to be used with a single hand would be classified as a balance hole.

2. One hole for balance purposes not to exceed 1-1/4 inch diameter. (Including the surface opening).

3. No more than one vent hole to each finger and/or thumb hole not to exceed 1/4 inch in diameter (including the surface opening). This hole may not exceed 1-1/4 inch at any point through the depth of the hole.

4. One mill hole for inspection purposes not to exceed 5/8 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch in depth

So, yes, you can still have a weight hole no matter how many fingers you have in the ball.

I've seen a few balls with pinky holes, usually by people with arthritis.  I've never seen a ball with the index, middle, and ring fingers drilled.

I got advised to get the index finger put in as it would take some of the pressure off of the other two fingers . . . . fingers crossed that it helps to take some of the problems away.
