Layout Opinions
« on: December 31, 2008, 10:35:56 AM »

A lefty just came to me for a ball. He chose the Virtual Gravity because of it's strength. He's been complaining about the balls he;'s had over the years not hooking enough. When I checked his track I was not surprised to see a very very low, small track. His pap is 3 1/2 over x 1" up. I want to place his pin about 4 1/2 from pap and that puts it close to his middle finger. Now, he's a very low tracker, low rev medium speed bowler. My question is, should I go pin high or pin low for pretty slick lanes with weak backends?

Where are you planning to put the MB?  I would put the pin above the fingers to retain some energy and put the MB on his VAL to rev it up early.

IMO, low pin to get the ball into its roll earlier.  Somewhere above grip center but below the MF.  As low as he tracks you don't need to worry about clipping the finger holes.  If that gives too much thumb weight, use a weight hole similar to the Rico layout.  --  JohnP

And just throwing this out there as well...  For people who track low and really spin the ball (like one of my teammates on Tuesday night), I've found that pin distances around 2.5 to 3 inches from the PAP tend to work well for them on slicker conditions, since the ball needs to rev up quickly when it finally does find friction and gets a chance to transition into the hook and roll phases.  Having the pin up closer to the VAL also lets the ball transition more quickly, which again is useful for getting the ball to stop spinning and start rolling.

So, maybe 3" pin high with MB in the strong position? That would put the MB about 2" left of thumb.

That sounds like a good choice to me.  See how the ball rolls and put a flare-increasing x-hole in it if the ball needs a little more oomph.

According to Storm tech, drilling into the "key" will enhance the ball's reaction. They recommended 3 to 4 inch p2p with the thumb in the key. I did this, but when i weighed it up it had too much finger weight and about 1.5 ounces of side. so, i put balance hole about 1.5" above the gripline and about 2" past the VAL. I just hope it hooks for him. Thanx for the tips!

Greg, I recently asked for help about a similar situation.  Their's a guy in my league that uses a spinner type of release where his track is really low and he has a lot of ball tilt.

From what I gather it's probably a good idea to place the pin close to the guys VAL and above the fingers.  So instead of the pin being about the middle finger, place it 3.5" to 4" from his pap but about 25 degree angle to VAL.  I'm not exactly sure where the pin location will end up for your friend but it's probably going to be closer to the ring finger but high above.

I hope this helps you out.

Whatever you do don't place the pin below the fingers and this will cause the ball to have a slow response to fricition which I feel is a bad layout for a really low track bowler.
