I Have a Boo-Boo! Can You Help?
« on: January 10, 2004, 08:17:36 PM »
Hi guys and gals,

Those of you who drill balls, perhaps you can help me out.

A couple of weeks ago, I suddenly started developing a callous/blister on the inside corner of my thumb, right next to the upper corner of the nail.  I haven't changed the thumbhole pitch, but I've been concentrating on staying behind the ball all the way through the swing (my natural inclination is to start turning the ball too soon), and getting a couple of extra revs with my fingers.

If one of your customers presented such a thumb to you, what would you expect is the problem?

TIA!

You know I am not a driller, but experience tells me, regardless of your release, at least 2 other possibilities may be partially responsible, if all other factors have remained constant.
1. you are putting your thumb in at a different angle, and it is, therefore, exiting the hole at a different angle.
2. you lost or gained some weight (or some other factor, like low winter humidity) so that your thumb is smaller or larger. It may be too tight and rubbing or too loose and you are unconsciously knuckling it & it is rubbing.

Again, there could be other reasons or possibilities. Good Luck.

Thanks much, guys.

Do either of you think it could be because my thumb is now exiting in a different position, since I'm not coming around the ball as early as I previously was?  Perhaps the lateral pitch has been wrong all along, but I never noticed it because I was turning the ball early?  Or perhaps it was correct, but now needs to be changed?

It's too early to tell if my track has changed, but I currently have a fairly unusual ball track, I believe.  The track clips my thumb hole, but is 2-3 inches from my middle finger.  My PAP is 5" over and 1 5/8" up.

TIA, again!

YOur thumb should not really be exiting differently, but if your wrist is now in a new position, you could be doing several things differently.

You're the one who shot 800+. I don't even dream that high ... (Too busy answering silly questions here. )

Yes, that's an unusual track; the only guy I saw who did that was very inconsistent, which does not seem to be your problem. ALl things being equal, your track's only significance is in the way you have to drill your ball and which surfaces are best for a given lane condition. The track is not good or bad in and of itself. All *can* be effective.

Have you checked your span?? Your hand might have grown(maybe even shrunk). I have had this problem several times. I no longer have this problem, so I beleive I have fixed the problem with my thumb.

Who shot 800+, me?  Not a chance!

If I manage to throw one 700+ series a year, I'm a happy camper.

channel surfer, thanks, but my span hasn't changed.

I'll take it up with my ball driller.  I just wanted to get some ideas, so I'll be better able to evaluate his response when he tells me what he thinks is the problem.

Thanks!

I just put pieces of Vise tape on the inside and outside of my thumb and no blisters. Smooth exit of the thight thumb with a good release. Do not have to squeeze or hang on to the ball. Just slips out perfect. Since then my average has  gone up from 159 to 187. During the last month have been having practice games with a 207 average. During league time it's a different story because of lack of  concentation in keeping my arm straight and follow thru my target. Just have to do what Earl Anthony did. No big hook or stong throw. Just keep your arm steady thru the follow thru and release. His release looked very limp but was steady.
