illegal weight hole
« on: July 26, 2006, 10:11:15 AM »
Has anyone ever heard of someone drilling a weight hole and sticking a foreign heavy object in it and plugging it to create a sort of "flip block"?  Would this give a benefit to a ball?  I heard a rumor that someone local has done this to his ball....

Sure they use to do it back in the old days, drill the hole, fill it with some metals and than plug back on top of it.. I believe that is why the PBA now states if ball is plugged, must be clear plugged and no more than 3/8 of an inch. Don't quote me on that PBA part!

Nevertheless, once you run into a weight control at the venue you are in trouble anyway... although I think that additional side or top weight is in today's balls rather counterproductive. In times of pan cake blocks, those added coins etc. will surely have had a positive influence, but with the fine-weighted core designs around, I do not think that added weight will help much.

I've heard,..that a little carefully placed lead say, in a 1" x 3" hole drilled, filled, and plugged on your pap was great for late night pot games back in the day,...just what I heard.

I don't know the benefit today, but my dad told me about a mechanic at a house he bowled at 30 years ago had a ball which he drilled out and but a large amount of lead in.  When he could control the ball it struck like nobody's business.

We had a ball like this way back when I was a kid working at the bowling alley.  It had a LOT of lead shot in it and would do circles, reverse direction and go airborne.  It vanished after one night punching a hole in a masking unit.

I've got a black beauty at my grampa's house weighing in at a hefty 19 pounds. He has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy with that ball ;-)
