Used ball with weird drilling
« on: August 14, 2006, 03:51:04 PM »
Just got an X-Factor ReLoaded with the following drill, for a right-hander: CG kicked LEFT of the grip (it's below and to the left of the middle finger), pin above and to the LEFT of the middle finger. RAD is below and to the right of the thumb hole, where you'd expect it.

What's this drilling going to do for me? I'm right-handed.

Depending what your axis point is, I would say it will create superb length with a very angular backend reaction.  Re-Loaded is a skid-flippy ball by nature, so this drilling will only add to that reaction.

How high and how far left is the pin?

High pin gives you length, MB right of thumb gives strong backend.

The ball has about a 2.5-inch pin, so the pin is about 10:30 or 11 o'clock above left of the middle finger, while the CG is about 7:30 or 8 o'clock below left of the middle finger. Both items are about 2 inches away from the middle finger.

What someone did, using the same basic thumbhole, was to swap the fingers from the standard side of the pin and CG (i.e., pin above and right of ring, CG below and right of ring) to the other side of the pin and CG, and left the MB in the same place.

I'm worried that I might thump the middle finger with this drill. I was also kind of wanting to sand this ball a little -- I have another ReLoaded that I was planning to polish and set up for skid/flip -- but I guess I won't be doing that.

Anyone else have experience with this drilling for a righty? What challenges do I face with it?

I had an original X-Factor that was drilled similar pin was high over middle finger with the RAD about 1.5" right of the thumb CG was slightly right of GC with  a small weight hole drilled to bring it to 0. I absolutely loved it at the center I was bowling in at the time. The pattern was a 44' christmas tree medium with beat up heads. The drilling completely ignored the front 35' or so and pushed very easily with a strong flip/arc.
A drilling like that shouldn't flare over the middle finger cause the bowtie should be quite high. Some people will clip the thumb when a ball has negative weight.
I would imagine that the previous owner was a high rev low tracker as was the previous owner of the X-Factor I had.

This drilling is about how 5x5 looks for me.  I had it in a Ravage II.  This ball went for MILES and then went hard enough around the corner that it almost came back to me.

So what they've given you is correct....mega skid and lots of backend.

If you're a high tracker, it will thump.  That would put the pin around 6 inches from PAP.  You could fix it with a weight hole, but the CG is already on the negative side so I would say plug it.
