I need help...
« on: January 10, 2006, 05:59:16 AM »
I am seriously losing my love of bowling for one reason.  I cannot get rid of my thumb troubles.  I've visited 3 pro shops in 2 states, and no matter who plugs and redrills my stuff, I always get a blister developing at the base of my thumb.

Can anyone explain what might be going on?  I am not blaming the drillers either, just too similar to be a coincidence.  I've been completely refit and measured as recently as Decemeber.

Specifically the problem is occuring in the soft skin right where the ball meets the bottom of the thumb.  It steaches from the beginning of the thumb from the palm, up to the first crease of the thumb.  The blister is usually the size of a pea and takes about 3 games to form, and the 4th to begin tearing.  I've had my span either be a bit streached, to right now where its a bit short.

Please help me get this resolved

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have a callous in the same area.  Had it for 40 years, even when I laid off for about 10 years.  It sounds as if you may just be squeezing, but without seeing you there's no way to know.

Hard to say...

To long of a span?

Squeezing the ball, due to LATE timing and a large thumb hole / to much reverse in the tumb / to much bevel?

Squeezing the ball, due to EALY timing and a large thumb hole / to much reverse in the tumb / to much bevel??

I'd see a qualified coach, have him/her check your ball fit, and your game...

I had a similar issue...except that my skin would just dry out and crack.
Originally I thought it was pitch, but I tested the ball rolling off and it turned out to the bevel around the thumb hole.

Even though the corner was rounded off, because of my "softer" hands it was still rubbing and agitating my thumb.  So after beveling it down some more, the problem was solved.

Or as mentioned, you could be squeezing and should try some tape or something.  I just tried that Magic Carpet stuff, and it has worked wonders for getting a consistantly clean release.
