Layout Tips
« on: April 17, 2009, 09:26:32 AM »
I'm wondering what layouts tend to work for you guys, and what type of layouts(if any specific ones) typically give a good reaction on sport patterns.  What type of reaction is that for you?

My thinking is that very controllable reactions are typical for sport patterns, not exactly a true arc but definitely not skid/snap.  That would help avoid over/under right?  Then there's the question of the ball having enough energy/entry angle to carry.  I'm wondering how one would acheive a reaction like that through layouts.

My stats are in my profile.  I prefer to play straighter but most times it seems like that type of line just isn't there for me unless I don't come around the ball as much.  That could be just because the PBA patterns I've been bowling on at a particular house is hooking a little more than it should be.

on sport i have found great success with weaker ball with higher RGs with tons of surface ex: green vibe at 360 or avalanche solid at 500. especially after a few games of burn. because the ball is higher RG it will want to get down the lane but because of the surface it will start earlier and even out the reaction.

on fresher stuff my rival and noize are unbeatable
the rival is about 5 1/4x4 1/8 with a small hole on the VAL about 1/2" down OOB surface (4000)

the noize is close to the same except i layed the core down a little more to get an even smoother reaction. same hole  with the surface at 2000 (OOB is 1000)

i have also had success with pearls drilled  earlier for when the noize and rival start burning up i can play the same part of the lane and use the pearl that will get down the lane better. currently i have a vapor zone and T road pearl. for that role

cheech, I also have a Rival, it's drilled 4 1/4" x 4" pin under ring.  I leave it at 2000 abralon.  It's one of the better balls I've thrown for sure but I still run into over/under problems more often than not.  I get a good midlane read and a hard arc out of this ball.  For what it's worth, it flares about 2"(maybe a little more) I think for me with about 1/8" separation between the oil rings.  This is next to the space between the fingers/thumb, not sure if that's the location you're supposed to measure the flare at.

I'm not saying I'm perfect but I do expect a little area even on sport patterns.  Not sure if I should use weaker drillings, stronger drillings, more surface, etc.  Again, the problem is not hook but just over/under, missing in a pinch results in hitting the face and missing out a board or two results in washouts or 2-8 variants.  Sometimes it could be lane play which is my fault because one time I just moved in 10 boards and the pocket opened up, I had 3-4 boards at the breakpoint to strike and the worst thing I left playing there was weak 10s. This was on the Chameleon.

It sounds like around 5" pin to PAP for you is a good controllable reaction, in general.  Being a little rev dominant, even with not so many revs you'd think that would work for me too.
