Sorry guys, that I don't know the technical terms or board #'s yet. But I am a rt hand bowler who likes to hug the very right side of the lane and have a ball go straight most of the way......then in the last 8-10 ft turn into the pocket. I seem to do better with pearl coverstocks because of the added lenght, but was wondering if there was a certain drill layout that might work best from this spot for a med. speed and rev. player like myself? Thanks in advance for your help!-Brian

BigBZ-are you a high track player?  Do the oil rings on your ball track close to your thumb and fingers?

Please update your profile with revs, speed, and basic stuff to help us better answer your questions.

Hey, i may have some golf questions for you.

Andrew-yes, the oil rings are pretty close to the thumb and fingers.(matter of fact sometimes I hit the finger holes with my Dry Heat) I would love to know what my rev's are, but have no idea how to find it out?(speed is around 14mph....that's about all I know

Fire away with any golf related ?'s that you have, because unlike my bowling knowledge(non-existant!lol)I'm pretty on top of things when it comes to the game and especially clubs.

Ragnar-thanks for the layout info, I'll have to try that!!! Couple of ?'s though:What is PAP and what does it do?(effect?) Also I just recently found out that balls come with different lenght pins.....what is the reason for that?(pros and cons of long and short pins?)

Big,

Your PAP is your Positive Axis Point, it where the ball rotates on its axis.  Everyones PAP is different (normally).  It is rare to find someone with exactly the same PAP as yours.  This PAP is the most important thing when drilling balls.  Since you track near the thumb and fingers I would guess your PAP to be 5 3/4 inchs or so and up alittle.  Please visit your local proshop to find YOUR pap.  If the guys looks clueless and/or doesn't know what a PAP is.  Run and never go back.

The best drilling for you would be something early and controllable or really long and strong.  Since you want to play straight up the outside, where there is very little oil (normally), a length drilling or control would suit you best.

Length:  If you want something long, I would suggest pin above bridge or ring and cg(center of gravity, small marking on the ball) about 1/2 from your center of grip.

Control:  I think Rags covered that really well.  That is the layout I would use.

I like the pin above ring, cg in palm for a long skid and controllable backend.  This drilling won't snap hard into the pocket but it will make a very hard arc towards it.

Feel free to PM with any question.

Andrew

Thanks for the info Andrew, it's much appreciated! I'll have to find out what my PAP really is. So far all the balls that I have either has the pin either under the middle finger or just to the right of my ring finger. Actually, tonight at league I used my green gargoyle for the first time and it worked very well.(pin next to ring and CG in palm) Very long and just enough hook to come back into the pocket nicely.

To find your PAP, take a clean, dry, low flaring ball (plastic is ideal) and throw a strike shot.  When it comes back, trace the oil line closest to your thumb and finger holes with a grease pencil.  Put the ball in an ashtray with the line parallel to the table and your thumb and finger holes above the line.  The very top of the ball should be your PAP.  Put a 1” piece of tape (contrasting color) there.  Throw the ball again.  If the tape stays stable the first 15-20’ of the lane, you’ve found it.  It might take a little tweaking to get it just right.  The measurement of the PAP is taken from your grip center.  Measure straight over from your grip center to the spot just above/below the tape, then measure up or down again to the center of the tape.  A typical measurement is 5” over, 1” up.
