Pin distance translates to half of the ring finger span, i.e. if the ring finger is 4 1/2", then a 2+" pin. Top weight generally 2.5-3.5 oz.

What would be the results if a shorter pin, let's say 1" was used in the example just used?

You wouldn't be able to use such a big hole unless the TW was high.

2-3" 3oz top is perfect.

Reaction wise-none. It just hinders versaility with adjusting, as well as size of the weight hole.
