Impossible Fit

I've been playing with the thumb hole for months now and can't get a good fit to where I feel i dont need to squeeze the ball to hold onto it.

I've changed the span, more bevel with tape, no bevel, lots of tape, cork, thumb saver, pitch changes, everything you can think of I've tried.  This is frustrating!

I got it as close to where I do not need to squeeze, but now it is too tight and my thumb ends up throbbing after the first game.

Are there any softer tapes/inserts to put into a ball that will expand and contract with my thumb so it does not feel like it is coming out of a vise each time I throw it?  It does not always stick, but you can feel the friction when it comes off.

THIS IS FRUSTRATING!!

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO!

You do not need to have the thumbhole that tight to not squeeze it.  Are you not keeping your hand underneath the ball, or trying to project it too far out onto the lane?  Are you remembering to relax your entire hand and let the natural movements of your arm/hand and gravity do the work for you?

Just so you have another example to base your experience from, I am picky about how the ball feels and have been fighting it for ages.  I finally got something I like in the past few months.  I even tried Magic Carpet, but did not like the feel of it very much.  Since I have longer, skinny fingers with a decent sized span, I use 1/8" reverse and no lateral in the thumb, ovaled by hand to fit my thumb shape, and beveled just until I don't hang in the ball anymore.  (Too much bevel gets me in trouble)  I use Vise Hada tape on the back of my thumb to give me a consistent feel, and make adjustments in the fit with black tape (Frankentape is the greatest thing ever!), then use one piece of white tape for grip (tape placed toward the palm side of the thumbhole).  The thumbhole is snug enough that I can hold the ball at my side with zero grip pressure, but it is also NOT so tight that I have to jam my thumb into the ball or anything.  My thumb slides in and out easily if I put it in the ball without putting my fingers in as well.

I also struggled for some time with fit.  Ended up going with slightly less reverse pitch, a little shorter span, a tad of side pitch, a tighter than normal hole, and an application of Frankentape on friction areas.  I know that seems like a lot, but I finally got a good snug fit that doesn't hang or create blisters.

Buy some Frankentape from Valentino's...you won't be sorry.

Timing sometimes can cause these problems too. being a little earlier helps to get rid of this problem sometimes.

I used to make my thumbholes so there was no way I could stick in the ball. What I failed to realize was that I was losing a ton of power and reaction potential out of teh ball.

I have since made the hole smaller, contoured it to fit my thumb and added Magic Carpet to the thumbhole. The Magic Carpet allows the thumbhole to fit tighter without having to worry about it sticking.

I have also decided to use Turbo's thumb tape to take me skin texture and moisture level out of the equation.

+1 for you fellows mentioning Frankentape. That tape is great. I do squeeze slightly. I can add a piece of white tape to the back of a thumb hole that is a bit loose and if taht makes it a bit tight, I can place a piece of Frankentape over that piece of white tape and I can still get out of the ball without hanging up.

Im going to go with a swing issue or timing issue.

I have a tendency to get my swing out of line and "redirect" it at the bottom.  When I do this my grip feels way out of whack, if you get a grip that feels good or helps you clear it you are probably still throwing poor shots.

You can make your thumb almost as snug as you want and still get out clean with this stuff.  I went from 5/16 under- 1/4 reverse in my thumb to 0/0 and have no issues with squeezing at all.  I've hooked about 6 people in my area on this stuff.  It's also nice because it adheres very well no worries about it peeling off and having to re-apply.

Hey Mike,

If it's just some type of thumb insert you're looking for, Magic Carpet is good or you can try an old...old trick. I used to use this before bowler's tape was even around, it's called moleskin. You can find it usually in any drugstore in the foot section.  It's actual purpose is to protect your feet but it is soft and cushioned to where it can contract if pressed against.  Hope this helps some...

I know what you mean.  Ever since I started using it, I can't bowl without it.  And I've gotten three or four other people to use it regularly as well!

Thanks for all the help guys.  It never really effected my bowling, but it simply hurts after each day I bowl!!

Is there a way to oval out my thumb a little more with a round file?

Thanks!

Hey Mike,

Yes, you can open or oval out a thumb with a round file as well but I highly recommend using a bevel sander (or have various grits of sandpaper to help smoothen the hole) after the fact as the file may leave rough edges or grooves in the thumb.

Here's how you oval your thumb to your personal fit.  Take a wax pencil or crayon and draw a straight line down from between your fingers to the center of the thumb.  Now mark 4 points on your thumb 12,3,6 and 9 (12 being the end of the straight line or top of the thumb hole).  Now insert your fingers in first and slowly insert your thumb half way into the ball.  Look at where the sides of your thumb are now making contact in the hole, this would be the area you'd want to work out.  Typically most bowlers are somewhere from 4-4:30 to 10-10:30 on the opposite side (for a RH bowler).

Another method is to coat (or color) your thumb on the sides with the crayon and then insert your fingers then thumb into the hole.  Now remove your thumb and you should see residue of the crayon in your thumbhole to where you are making contact which also tells you the area which is snug on your thumb and needs to be worked out.  PM if you need and I can explain in further detail, thanks.
