Balance hole...Understanding
« on: September 17, 2013, 05:47:28 AM »
USBC states you may not have more then one ounce of side weight.
Guess my question is. Do you have to have a balance hole to make your ball legal?
Had the local pro shop drill all my balls. All my balls have a balance hole drilled in them.
5 balls total.
One thing I have noticed is all the really good bowlers at are house (200+) don't
have balance holes drilled in there balls. Are these balls legal?
confused.........Need help on this to understand    learn me  PLEASE!!!!

The best way to some up balance hole locations:

"By choosing a drilling technique, the location and the size of the balance hole, a ball driller can now reduce the strength of the drilled ball’s reaction by as much as 29% or increase it by as much as 55% using current USBC specifications"
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Your conspiracy theory may have legs but not for the reason you think. I have seen pro shop operators lay balls out meticulously for their buddies making sure to set them up to roll best under the conditions, while at the same time give thei or non-buddy customers very generic layouts without taking the time to watch them bowl.

Ideally, your driller should set the ball up without a weight hole and leave the hole as an option to tweak reaction. This all starts with order a ball with the right specs for you so that it can be set up without a hole being required under USBC Rules.

Surface has more impact on ball reaction than the weight hole.
