Snug Thumb - Still Dropping
« on: October 13, 2008, 12:20:00 AM »
How common is it for your span to get smaller?  It seems like the last couple weeks that my hand is REALLY stretched in order to get a good grip.  I also noticed in practice last night that no matter how much I tried to change my axis rotation I could only get about 15 degrees because it feels like I am dropping it.  I have never changed my thumb pitch to experiment, but I picked up an old ball that had a smaller span and it seemed to be more comfortable.  All of this adds up to my average being down about 30 pins so far this year and I am just trying to fish for any info I can.

Thanks

Could be your whole hand is swelled just a bit. Try throwing the old comfortable ball and see what happens.

How about a thumb pitch adjustment? Even a small change can do wondrous things for a relaxed grip, and if the pitch is wrong, even the tightest hole will give you a hard time holding the ball properly in the downswing.

even texture of a thumb hole can be a big difference. if it is too smooth it can come off too quick.

sorry but true.. the older a person gets he/she looses some strentgh, flexability and even some feeling in his/her hand, fingers, wrist the longer that persons bowls or does something for a long period of time over and over again.. it just happens and it can not be stopped, but it can be delayed a little with certain exercises and stretching routines.. I myself have had just the same thing start to happen a year or so ago and to make a long story short, I ended up shortening my span for just the same reasons.. it doesn't make you less man/women that you need to shorten or change pitches etcc.. wear and tear, its going to happen to all of us sooner or later..    slashrr69

A little bevel on the inside/finger-side of the thumbhole can make the span seem shorter and easier to exit.

Also, has there been a change in diet or weather that would swell your hand/fingers?
Beer and salty foods tend to do that.
