Considering Rico for wife's ball, but will it hit holes?
« on: March 06, 2010, 11:23:48 AM »
Ball will be a Hammer Raw Acid. Ball has about a 2.5-3 inch pin. Wife's stats are 3 over and about 1-1.25 up. Short PAP, but she's not spinning it. She covers quite a bit of track area.

Her upper bowtie is way off the fingers but some of the flare lines do come pretty close to her thumbhole. I'm trying to drill this ball to be the strongest ball in her bag (her only others are an old Roto Grip Silver Streak SE and a Track Solution PowerPlus EX) and was considering a pin-under-bridge layout to begin with, but a Rico layout would be nice *IF* we don't track over the holes. Are we in danger of doing this here?

Well if you think about flare...the frare rings may start near the thumb but flare away....so I would be surprised if she hits the thumb and if she does, it will flare off the hole.

I wasn't aware that RICO was the choice layout for making a ball the strongest in the bag.

http://brunsnick.com/rico_ball_layout.html

quote:
This layout is used simply for stability and a predictable ball reaction.

Also, I believe the "optimal" ball specs are a pin length approximately 1/2 of your span.  At least that's what Rico told me a long time ago:

quote:
To me, optimum specs are:

Half the distance of your ring finger

Top weight 2.7-3.2OZ

The longer the pin, the larger necessary hole and less variance. The shorter the pin the less variance with size and depth of hole.
The same goes for the top weight, higher-larger and the lower-less.

The strength of the ball is dictated by the choice of bowling ball....the layout will make it more predictable. If you are wanting a good ball for oil, one that is predictable/controllable, this should suffice.
The reason for the preferred pin distance is to not necessitate a oversize weight hole. It allows for more variance in altering reaction utilizing the weight hole.

Thanks for the responses. Half her ring finger span is probably 2.25 inches or thereabouts. The ball has a 2.5-inch pin so that's probably close enough.

The ball will be a Hammer Raw Acid, which comes at 4000 and no polish. We're going to try a variety of surfaces to get the desired aggressiveness. The reason I'm considering a Rico drill is that, if it's anything like the ones I've thrown, the ball will be fairly early and very even and predictable.

Her other two balls are both pin-up with the CG (and thus, the theoretical mass bias) kicked out to the positive side. One of them is a little too skid-snappy and the other ball (the SSSE) just has too many games on it. It's been resurfaced numerous times.

She typically struggles on fresh due to her rev rate, then gets better as the night goes along and she can see more friction.

It's either Rico or it will be pin-under-bridge. My biggest concern was hitting the holes with the flare rings.
