Is this Legal?
« on: January 27, 2007, 07:37:35 AM »
I'm a no thumber. I have a ball that was drilled with finger holes only. CG between finger holes with a half oz of top weight after drilling. No side or finger weight. This is legal as I understand the rules. I have now drilled this ball with new finger holes and a thumb hole. The cg and old finger holes are in the new grip center. I haven't checked it yet, but the statics should be legal. Is this ball legal for usbc play with the old finger holes in grip center or do they have to be plugged for the ball to be legal?
Thanx for your replies and expertise. I'm just playing around with this ball, but I might use it in a league if it's legal. Otherwise I'll make it a practice ball or plug either the new holes or the old ones.

The PBA plays by their own set of rules...

As far as I know, as long as the holes are in the correct locations so that your fingers or thumb can be inserted into them, the ball is legal whether you use them or not.

Here's where I think a distinction could be made.  As soon as a hole in the correct location for gripping is actually used for gripping purposes, it must remain in use as a gripping hole until competition has completed.

If a no-thumber wants to just cover their thumb hole that's fine, but as soon as they put their thumb in it to convert a spare, tough luck...

It's true you can have up to 5 holes for gripping purposes, 5 more holes for air-vent holes for each of the gripping holes, one x-hole and one mill hole for identification purposes. A total of 12 holes is allowed, but each hole has an exact purpose.

What the rule implies that if the hole is drilled for GRIPPING PURPOSES, then it is just that, a gripping hole. No other use for that hole is allowed. Once the hole is not used for gripping, it then becomes an extra balance hole, which is not allowed. Again the rule is implied in its meaning.

What Mark Grubrich is saying is EXACTLY what I said, although he is not making the implication that I am in reading the rule....
