Is this the right time for a Motion Hole?
« on: May 01, 2016, 06:14:25 PM »
A month ago, I drilled up a Roto Loco Pearl.  It's a nice second ball when league shot dries up.  I drilled it with the pin next to ring finger and CG in palm area.  My intention was to throw without a hole, then decide if one is needed.

What I am seeing in league is (on fresh) a low volume shot.  I generally start with a Chemical X at 4k and UFO extender polish.  As the shot dries out, I move in until I start to lose carry (usually during frames 3-5 of game 2).  At this point, I switch to the Loco Pearl.  This ball is much more angular than the Chemical X.  At this point, I am usually playing between 3rd and 4th arrows and sending out to 7 or 8 at the breakpoint.  Rarely do I ever get deeper than 4th arrow (a combination of volume in the middle and no one else playing there).

My issue is that if I miss a little wide (not by an arrow, but a few boards), the Loco Pearl pushes a touch too far down the lane and doesn't recover in time.  When this happens, it's an almost guaranteed 10 pin.

I would like to get a little stronger change of direction and a little more continuation through the pins.  I'm really close here, just looking for that last little bit to cover up some of my "typical league hack" misses.

Time for a Motion hole?  I had one on a Wrecker and would absolutely kill it on shots like this where I could get inside and swing the ball a bit.  Since the LP is a similar type of ball (flippy cover and a simple, lower diff core), maybe this will work.

Opinions?  Comments?

Thanks,
Scott

Sounds like it's a perfect canidate for a mo hole.

Sounds like it to me too. Still looking to do this to something like a Boost, Xcite or even stronger.

JMO but I would try it on a lower Rg ball.  The Motion hole raises the Rg and from what I have seen in my trials with it it works better on a lower Rg ball.  I have an original Yeti that works best from outside trajectories.  Once I move in past 3rd arrow it becomes more iffy for me.  In that case I'd find something stronger than the Loco Pearl for better carry as long as you are more comfortable deeper inside which it seems you are.

Also Motion holes work better for low tilt players better than higher tilt which should use a P3 instead according to Mo.  I am 17* tilt so in theory Motion holes won't work as well for me.  It's something, I learned as I experimented with this.

I agree with Scott, but I'd add,
Isn't a Motion hole usually designed to both increase length and backend?
If you'd like the ball to make it back to the pocket on shots thrown further outside, wouldn't a P3 or P4 hole be more appropriate than a Motion Hole?
That makes think that if you used a Motion Hole, you'd start to leave 2/10s or 2/8/10s, instead of plian 10 pins.

When you add dynamics via  P3/P4 hole, I think most of the "added Power" would be, for the LP, more towards the backend due to the polished surface. So, it should hook slightly more and slightly earlier to enable the ball to make a stronger turn at the breakpoint. It should be slightly less flippy but still have plenty of backend.

Very astute Jeff.  Good synopsis IMO.

I have done it with lower rg balls and most recently with a fight which is a high rg ball.  The fight was exactly what the OP described......weak when leaked right and would flat ten with the best of em.  I am a higher tilt player (20°) with med speed & 375 rpm's.  What I see with a motion hole is the ball pick up stronger in the mid lane and a stronger more continous motion on the back.  The fight was mediocre at best without the hole and a carrying machine after. The one part that is getting left out is the increased differential with the motion hole vs without.

If left OOB I could see a Fight burning up and leaving flat tens.  What surface and did you try it more polished saving energy and better carry?

I personally had a Nomad Solid also a 2 piece ball like the Fight OOB 1500 polished 5" pin to PAP pin under bridge this ball was great inside with great carry on the burn no hole.

Good points.  I think a motion hole may give a little more length due to higher rg, but could be offset (at least somewhat) by the increase in asymmetry and differential.

I think what I want/need is a touch stronger move on the backend...If I get too much length, I think this can be controlled with a little more surface under the polish.
