Ball Plug
« on: December 23, 2005, 02:45:39 PM »
Hi,

I do some ball work with a guy who has retired from the business.  I was looking to change some finger pitches in a few balls, and bought some of the 3 Resin mix.  My friend had hardener so we were good to go.  AFter pooring up some plug with 1 squirt of each stuff, and mixing for 2 minutes etc ... I poored the plug and let it sit over night.  The plug never cured.  The stuff is still very jelly like.  I am guessing that either the hardener was bad (it was a couple of years old, and a different brand), or I had the wrong mix (I went 1 plunger from each.)  Does anyone have any ideas where I went wrong, and second, does anyone have any good suggestions on how to get all the non-cured plug out of the ball?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Since it is still "jelly like", it should be relatively easy to just scoop it out with something, maybe a longer plastic spoon like you get at Dairy Queen .    Then wipe any remainder out thoroughly with a rag, and then maybe clean the hole out with isopropyl alcohol to ensure a good surface for your next go at plugging the hole.

You would probably have better results cleaning the hole out with MEK.

The ratio is 3:1. 3 squirts of hardener will equal 1 compound squirt.

Most pumps are calibrated so that one squirt of each give you the correct ratio. And no you shouldnt mix different plug brands resin and hardeners.

NEVER mix brands of resin and hardener.  They are specifically matched to go together.  Also, the pumps go with the material they were designed for and sold with.  For example, the Pro Plug Ultima I use is a 3:1 ratio of resin to hardener, but the pumps are designed so that one pump stroke of each gives the correct ratio.  --  JohnP
