Hair Brained Scheme- Building a Drill Press
« on: August 09, 2009, 03:01:40 PM »
I'm interested in some opinions from honest contributors and not smart@ssed comments.  I realize this is a hair brained scheme at building a drilling jig inexpensively.

Question- Have any of you seen the new cam lock jig system from Innovative?  Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but couldn't the apparatus for holding the ball be constructed from 1/2" thick plate metal and some threaded rods?  I already have a milling table I just need a jig to hold the ball stationary.  If anyone has experience with the Innovative Cam Lock jig please chime in, I'm interested to hear how it works.

The Innovative cam lock system works very nicely.

Brilliant idea!  I have an old jig that wobbles too much and the rubber feet on the hold down clamps are shot.

I imagine I just have to get a thick piece of aluminium and have it milled with a large circle in the middle and four slots on the corners to slide the threaded rods into.  I'll make four rods that are threaded on both ends.  On the top side of the rod I'll just use wingnuts, and on the bottom end of the rods I'll drill a hold through some kind of hard ball and use two nuts to hold the ball onto the end.  Then just drill a hole on the corners of the bottom plate and flare out the bottom of the hole, then push the rods up through.

Thanks, man, this is going to make trimming plugs a whole lot easier!

You should be able to tap the bottom sheet of aluminum and screw the threaded rods in with some locktite.  I'm still in the developmental stages, but I think this thing is going to work.

The AMF Vacujig that I drill on at the lanes I work at has the exact hold down you mention, the vacuum pump dies last year so we are using this all the time.  It has 2 rods, maybe a foot long, that screw into the horizontal plate on the press and it is threaded to accept a 1/2" wingnut.  The clamp plate is beveled to match the curvature of the ball and you just screw it down.  Takes a little bit, but it holds the ball down great. I guess the Innovative Cam lock can  me mounted to any type of mill drill press....wish we could buy one.

Good luck.
