Sold a ball on ebay and the core was drilled into...
« on: June 07, 2006, 09:05:05 AM »
Ball was a Columbia Action Packed, the Buyer received the ball and said that he could see that the core had been drilled into by looking into a finger hole.

He said that if his driller recommended him not having the ball plugged and redrilled, that he would like a refund. He stated that I should have listed in the auction that the core was drilled into....

My opinion is that it's used ball, and it won't be affected significantly by being plugged. I think it's "buyer beware" on used balls, and you accept the ball "as is"...

Any opinions?

I think his pro shop operator is just pissed he bought a ball from somewhere else.  I mean in some roto balls, like the entry level balls, the core is so big, you would never be able to drill into, according to his driller.

Probably 75% of used stuff has at least some small part of the core drilled out.  You'd be hard pressed to drill into the core on a Power Groove, but an Action Packed has a fairly large core.  It would be difficult to avoid, especially for the thumb hole, as it's probably going to be drilled mostly into the side of the core.  On a Buzzsaw, put the thumb about 6" from the pin and see how easy it is to avoid drilling into the core.  You can't do it.

I don't see why it would make a difference.

Posted this in your other thread

I'm far from an expert on drilling, but I think just about everyball I own has the finger/thumbholes drilled into the core. I think on most balls if you drill more than 2 inches down, which would be pretty standard for a thumb, you've got a good chance at hitting the core.

Sounds like a case of buyers remorse to me. I wouldn't give him a refund as long as you posted pictures. He bought the ball used, what did he expect?

First of all, it is difficult to drill a ball and not drill into the core somewhere.  If he wanted to plug the ball, which I have done many times, it does not hurt the ball unless the ball has been plugged numerous times.  I think the guy needs to get over it.  If it was advertised as a used ball, what did he expect?

I agree with just about eveyrbody so far.

Drilled into the core? I'd like to see this guy's driller not do that at all ON EVERY BALL HE DRILLS. Horsefeathers!

Here's the revised version of his story, which I just received:

"I don’t think you understand. If you look into the ring finger’s hole…the hole continues all the way down revealing that the core/center pin has been hit with the drill bit and has gone all the way through to empty space on the inside of the ball. In other words there is a big black hole in the ring finger of the ball. My pro shop says the hole can be plugged however it could take up to a week just to plug it because of the hole hitting empty space. Every time he plugs the hole, the material will seep into the empty space until that empty space inside the ball is full. And that this may have an adverse effect on the ball or it may even help the ball’s reaction. I hope that it has a good effect.

The "hole" could very well be a void between the pin and core...should not be a big deal at all....sounds to me like a pro shop op upset he bought a ball from somewhere else. When you buy a used ball, you buy a used ball....
