Just won a Rising Star, now how to drill
« on: February 26, 2011, 11:08:26 PM »
I just won a Rising Star in a raffle.  It has a 3inch pin and 3 ounces of top weight.  I think Id like to drill it to be smooth through the entire lane. Would a pin in palm (RICO) work good for this, not sure if specs are good for it.  Maybe a 5.5 x 3 or label drill.    Sorry still working on the angle terms as I have been away from bowling during some family things the past couple years.   My arsenal currently has a Theory pin under bridge mb strong, Grand illusion, pin under bridge, (5 x 4), Nomad dagger pin over bridge cg center grip, Riot pin under middle finger cg kicked right under ring finger.  Urethane grenade 4 x 4.  I just bought the theory, nomad, riot and grenade last month.  My specs are in my profile.  PAP is 5 over, medium speed 16-17 mph.

Thanks

I have been looking at getting a Rising Star and what I have heard is it is a very smooth ball as is. I would look at putting a similar drilling on it as the Riot. From what I have heard from people with both is that similar drillings on those balls make for very complimentary ball reactions.

My boss has been throwing one for a few weeks now. In order to make this one smooth you should try a pin down layout, and more importantly, knock a little gloss off the cover. It looks good on the lane for him.

Just this week I drilled a Rising Star with 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" layout with pin above.   (But understand that I use pin above due to my low speed & low rev rate so I can push it down the lane.)    I find the ball to be so good playing inside (3rd or 4th arrow) on any medium patterns.

If you are high revs and/or high speed THEN you would use your preference of pin below.   All it boils down to is how much push you need down the lane when you decide between pin above or pin below.

The ball's core already has a high RG rating but the hybrid coverstock is great on the medium oil  (or more oil if you use more surface; I use 4000 Abralon surface).
