lateral pitch
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:01:58 AM »
After doing the coke bottle test my thumb points at my index finger, so a good starting point would be 1/8 left (right handed bowler) right? Also my ball driller said if we go left you can not have forward pitch ( I am 3/8 forward). Can someone help me out with this. What are your recommendations?

Your ball driller is wrong.  Fit is based by your hand, and is individual to each bowler.  You can have any amount of forward or reverse pitch in the thumb combined with any lateral pitch.   Pitch is dictated by the size and shape of your hand.  If your hand calls for those pitches, than pitch your gripping holes accordingly.

There is no, "you can't" in proper fitting of the hand.  The hand will dictate what you need.

You may need to tweak the grip some, as you are looking for the custom fit that allows you to throw the ball with the proper pitches, maintain release versatility without causing any skin abrasions or hand pain.

" Pitch is dictated by the size and shape of your hand"

I have never heard this before....pitch is dictated by the flexibility the person has and the angle the thumb wants to lay in the thumb hole.

Size, shape and flexibility.    The span length dictates the amount of thumb pitch for forward and reverse.  The angle the thumb moves in or away from the palm dictates the lateral pitch.   The shape or thumb length also effects the amount of pitch in the thumb.

  1. so you see, you have span length = Size,  you have thumb length = Shape, and you have then flexibility into the palm = angle.

xx, you are correct in saying that span has a role in forward and reverse thumb pitch, but just a role.  Other factors include, the length of your thumb, moist vs dry skin, age of the bowler and other potential hand problems unique to each bowler.

It may be time to seek out another pro shop.

As well as knowing the person you are fitting....there is static fit and a fit that coordinates with one that is motion. You have to know the person is going to swing the ball as well as their release.
