Hi, I can't find the link online. Isn't there special rules on the static weight for a thumbless 2 finger ball? A ball with just 2 finger holes?

I don't know where J_Mac found his information, but it's not correct according to the online USBC equipment specifications manual, link follows (and man, this was hard to find on the new USBC website).

The pertinent information is found on P I-3 and is dated April, '09. The spec for 10 - 16 lb balls is:

c. A ball drilled without a thumb hole may not have
more than 1 ounce difference between any two
halves of the ball.

For 8 - 10 lb balls it changes to 3/4 oz. -- JohnP

The information I posted is from the most recent version of the USBC Equipment and Specifications Manual. Page I-3 was updated in July of this year. Your link is out of date...

Not sure why there was a change made, but that is the rule as it stands now.

J_Mac -- My apologies, USBC needs to remove the link to the old manual from their site. Let''s see if I understand the regs on thumbless balls as currently written.

This section would govern side and finger/"thumb" weights, as it applies to all balls.

This section would apply specifically to thumbless balls for top/bottom weights.

Am I correct on this? I have always recommended to my "thumbless" customers that we drill a thumb hole anyway because of the difficulty of meeting the 1 oz limit on top weight as was in the old manual. I may change that now. -- JohnP

Added on edit: The specs for lighter balls do change to 3/4 oz for the b. section and 2 oz for the c. section.

Sweet, I don''t need to put random thumb holes in my ball anymore. Will make full roller trick drills much better =)

Plus you can probably get 2 different ball reactions out of the same ball by inverting it.

Based on how the USBC uses the center of the finger holes as the grip center to be used for checking static weights for thumbless layouts, I would think that, with a thumbless layout, it would be advantageous to use pin-in balls (0-1, or 1-2) as opposed to longer pin out balls. This would place the CG more near the finger area and make it easier to comply with statics.

Your thoughts?

The ball I drilled put the CG right between the fingers and the pin just about the ring finger. Turn it over and you get another ball pin below middle finger. Had short pin like you said.

Inverting in the ball is an AWESOME idea... I'ved toyed with the idea a bit before. The only problem is difference in the sizes of my fingers. I would have to drill the fingers the same size and put tape in whichever hole the ring finger is using.
