Layout and/or ball recommendation
« on: February 19, 2013, 03:49:18 PM »
One of the leagues I bowl in is late shift.  The house has older synthetics (Heddon I believe) and is oiled in the morning.  They have daytime leagues (most bowlers using plastic) as well as early shift leagues.  Once our league starts, half the house bowls after a 5 man league and the other bowls after a junior league and open bowling.  On days that school is off the lanes are extra brutal.  The heads and mids are generally very dry and there is a ton of carrydown present.

I am looking for something that will get thru the heads/mids and have enough cover to turn somewhat in the carrydown.  First I was thinking of an Arson Low Flare but then thought that this ball was probably created to control lanes with fresh backends and wouldn't be good for carrydown.  Then I was thinking about a Wrecker and didn't know if the skid/flip characteristic would be good but thinking that a hybrid cover may be what I need.  The best thing I have right now is a Tropical Heat hybrid.  I can get far enough left to get into the pocket but it doesn't have enough drive to get thru the carrydown.  It is in box finish and is drilled 65 x 5 3/8 x 55.  My stats are in my profile but I throw the ball relatively slow and have approx 315 rpms with a high amount of tilt.  I was thinking of a layout with a large Drill Angle and a small VAL angle, which would get me the most length and then hopefully turn thru the carrydown.  Not sure on the pin to pap distance.  Any suggestions on layout and what ball(s) may be good choices for what I am looking to accomplish?

The way I've tended to see this type of condition is you need to control the ball thru the fronts and not create too much angle to intensify the already tough condition. Generally when a condition blows open, Storm covers tend to shine more so as they respond to friction later.
Also I'm a big component of using weight holes to help control the mids & back ends...if you have the proper piece at the proper time, you're less effected by carry down...this references lay out as well.
So I would suggest maybe a step up from the Heat with a pin up in the same area as your current...5 1/4-5 1/2" to pap...this will help create a cleaner thru the fronts reaction minimizing track flare...add a weight hole 2 1/4" down the VAL to help slow the ball down and respond to the mid-back end easier by opening up the flares. Prolly a 7/8-1" bit X 2-2.5" deep...to have enough of a effect.
Wrecker or shatter might not be bad...also maybe knock the surface down then smooth back up to 4000 then maybe finish it off with newspaper (equivalent to 20k finish)...lemme know if this makes sense

Ric, Your post makes perfect sense.  Thanks for the reply.  I will drill up a Wrecker as you suggested and let you know how I made out with it.  And yes, thanks for the tip on the newspaper.  One question.  Do you wet it or use it dry?

And thanks to charlest for asking you to look at my post!

Can you still put it on the bottom of the bird cage when you're done sanding bowling balls with it, though?   :P

I am not privy to that info but I'll ask...when did you get a bird?

A quick update on this.  I drilled up a Wrecker this weekend and before drilling I put it on the spinner and hit it with 1000, 2000 and 4000 pads and finished it off with wet newspaper.  The layout on the ball came to 25 x 5 1/4 x 55.  I put a 2.50" deep hole using a 7/8s drill bit 2 1/4" down my VAL.  Using this weight hole to determine my Drill Angle is what made the DA so small (25 degrees).

Used it in league and this seemed to help greatly with the condition I am seeing.  We have shadow bowling for practice so I can't tell how the ball is rolling thru the pins.  Once we started I was flush in the pocket for the first 5 frames.  Only had 2 strikes and 3 solid 10s.  I moved my feet 2 left and kept my target and went sheet.  Bowled another high 240 game the second game.  Third game I started to leave very weak 10 pin leaves.  I didn't make the right adjustment and left about five 10 pins that game.  Shot a 690 for the night so I'm very happy.

Just wanted to say thanks to Ric for the help and for sharing your knowledge.  It's much appreciated!

JS glad to see good results...keep in mind, check the flare separation...if the ball is slightly late or lazy into the pocket, i.e. corners or ring 10"s....open the flares up a bit. This will get to respond a tad sooner smoothing out the 35-40' spot; go to a 1" bit same depth.
But glad to hear some good results!
