Title: Layout for a forward releasing friend...
Post by: ambi1 on December 24, 2010, 05:47:36 PM: Hi, Firstly Season's best to all.

A friend usually releases at around 30 degrees (90 degrees being the ultimate side roll release.) Sometimes the lane conditions require him to move in. However due to the forward release that he is used to he doesn't usually kick the corner pins.

Any suggestions for a sharper breaking shape? Placing the mb near the thumb doesn't seem to work.

If it helps I would describe his ball as a forward rolling tire that turns at the break and rolls forward toward the pocket.

My only game was an end over end roll like you stated but when I had to move inside it didn't quite carry the same.

I've got two balls (a BW Sting and a Fast) which are 20 x 5" x 20-30 and they transition really quickly at the breakpoint, creating a lot of angle pretty easily.

Post by: icewall on December 28, 2010, 08:18:55 AM: according to mo pinel, if it's an asymmetrical core the closer you place the pin to 2 3/4" from the pap the longer the ball will hold axis rotation. the closer to 6 1/4" pin to pap the more it will forward roll.

but all this will do is hold his 'initial' rotation longer. the bowler is the one who creates the proper rotation and doubt a 'special' drill would help any more then just a little bit.

Thanks for the responses. Just came from practice with him. We had downloaded software to calculate axis and rotation.

his is axis: 40-50 degrees
tilt: 30 degrees
rpm: 230 or so
pap is 5 3/8 west (leftie), 1 1/16 north.
speed: 16 to 17 mph

Been trying for 2 years + to have him side roll the ball more.. but can''''t seem to develope a consistent release. He even enrolled for a 6 days session at Kegel.

Any suggestions?

11 to 14 degrees of tilt is a very good benchmark starting point release.

If those stats you posted are correct.

50 degrees of axis rotation is plenty on the side of the ball. I think his issue is his higher tilt numbers.

Get the ball to read the lane earlier and not sharper. Play the lane from front to back instead of side to side.

I think with a weaker and sharper ball, your going to get larger entry angles and stranger spare leaves, along with 10 pins. Angularity is good, and its bad. With 30 degrees of tilt, the sharper angular ball might be a nightmare.

I have very similar specs to him but right handed and almost no axis tilt and about 25-30 degrees of angle on the RPMs but also well into the 300s for RPM. I tend to go with really high pins some times as much as 3 inches above the bridge with the MB kicked toward the PAP a bit to tame the flip that will come with that pin length.

Yup, pretty sure the specs are correct. checked mine as a yardstick, and it was pretty spot on.
Actually he was asking if there is a way to layout the ball to get a sharper break as he doesn't carry the corner if he moves in. ( Of course he should just move the breakpoint in a bit more, but that is another story).

Yup tilt is high, it's over the equator and pointing over his right shoulder. We measured pap, taped it, took videos and downloaded a chart to get the tilt and rotation.

Yes, it would follow because he seems to carry better with wrister. Not the adjustable ones, just the old style ones. Seems he has to strenghten his wrist then.

You need to adjust surface for a proper ball reaction as desired and laneconditions found on your center.
