Summer tests
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:29:17 AM »
Just thought about trying a few layouts over the summer between league seasons.

I've attached an image and will be testing with slingshots.

They the 3 layouts I've used most in my life and am wondering "all things being as close to equal as possible", just how much difference in ball motion this would create.

I understand that pin length will have to change from ball to ball, but am mainly interested in Pin to Pap and the CG in a neutral position for each ball.

Any thoughts?

I know Slingshots are cheap, but If I was to conduct this sort of experiment, I would choose something with a stronger cover and core.  Perhaps a 900G Hook or DV8 Misfit.

This likely won't create much of a difference on a THS since pretty much 70% of a balls reaction is in the coverstock and how it's finished.

Years ago I did something similar with 2 Ebonite TPC Players.  I did a pin up layout and a pin down layout and did my best to reproduce the same finish on each cover.  I couldn't spot enough of a difference to warrant having both pieces at the same finish.

With the CG in the palm, you arent going to see a huge difference between the same ball drilled different ways without a balance hole or different surfaces, especially in a symmetrical ball. Now there are exceptions to the rule but that's spending money. Buddy of mine has 3 Storm Crossroads, all drilled differently and all with different surfaces to give him the maximum of what he's looking for from each one.

Its really going to depend on the ball you choose and how the drilling effects the PSA. My thoughts would be to discover the strengths and weaknesses of each drilling for you and choose the balls that fit the strengths. The each should compliment the weaknesses.

i agree. unless the layouts are radically different like one 2" and another 5" you wont see much difference since a sym core doesnt have a strong enough undrilled PSA. unless you use a big enough balance hole, the major difference between the balls will be the length of the hook phase

to further comment on the above thoughts
i would also pick something else, something that you could have 2 of in your arsenal
try a benchmark piece, i have several 505t, gamechanger and will have another arson low flare

easily can see the difference in these 2 balls (same ball, 2 different drills)
depends on what you are looking for, if only THS, then i wouldn't waste your time
my multiples are more for the tournaments and sport leagues
