layout for Sync?
« on: March 11, 2013, 11:40:00 AM »
As a reward for myself after returning to bowling after 13 months off, I bought a Sync (forget the fact that my ball speed is down about 30-40% right now).  I was going to lay it out with pin above ring about 1/2 inch and MB about 2 inches out from thumb.  If I remember layouts correctly this would be very strong.  BUT,   in the year or so before I quit I was using the same layout on everything I own, pin above middle finger and everything else swung out to put MB an inch or so from thumb.  The question is, how much different would this reaction be from my original idea for the Sync?

I would recommend your pin above middle layout, especially if your speed is not up to par. The Sync is a strong and angular ball (for a solid particle) and controllable layouts will make it usable on THS.

PS, should we put out the welcome back mats for the legendary Rags?

Without knowing your PAP it is hard to know exactly what this will do. Pin above fingers for a high track 4-1/2" PAP would give you a smoother motion. If you track low and have a 5-1/2" PAP it would go much longer and flip more.

Not saying it is always necessary to layout everything according to dual angles or pin buffer. But you should at least know it so you have some idea of your pin to PAP distance. This measurement as well as where the balance hole goes wil dictate ball motion.

On edit: As I re-read your post I see you are mostly concerned with the difference between the two layouts. Pin above ring with MB further out will start the ball up earlier and make it roll more. The Sync is pretty strong as is so i would suggest the pin above middle and MB an inch away from thumb. But it would still be helpful to have your release specs for a more accurate suggestion. Also, dont be afraid to shine the Sync. At the release seminar Storm told us they had considered bringing the Sync to market as a polished solid since it is so strong.

Complete, I'm going to assume that when I get used to the new knee I'll be about where I was:  higher than average speed (18mph or so), higher than average revs, about 20 degrees axis tilt, not much axis rotation.  I'm not sure of my PAP, but I think it was about 5", maybe a tad more.  That help?

In the 3 games I've bowled since the knee went in I have no legs to speak of.  I.e., no power step, slower approach speed.  But those muscles will come back, with some work, and I anticipate being back to what I was in a couple of months.  That is, if this 67 year old body will go along with the program.  I want to get back to 215+ average again by next September.

Not a reply to your question about the Sync but more towards your knee situation. It will be better than it was hopefully!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a complete replacement of my right knee and I'm left handed. Wish I had it done sooner instead of 3 scopes in 3 years. It was done 2 years ago in April and I averaged 211 last year. Just keep up with your exercises and walking. I was LUCKY that I had the trainers of The Oakland Raiders 100 % of the time after the operation thanks to the players strike  and they had me on a FAST FORWARD program. Feb 28 was my birthday  66 !!!!! You will be fine! :)
You will LOVE the SYNC!

Use IT and BOWL UP A STORM
