Layout question

What's the best layout to use on a symmetrical ball to get it to hook and set on the back end?

My preference is the pin below and left of the thumb.  It works well if the cover of the ball is strong enough to get started up in the mid-lane.  I had my best success with it on a goliath (and most recently on a carbide+)...  I put it on a Columbia Zenith (pearl overseas), and the ball was over/under..just couldn't get started up early enough.

Did the pin under the thumb layout on a AMF triumph amp. Very straight through the heads, great early midlane read and then almost a hook set reaction on the back. I talk with Rick Benoit from Brunswick about this drilling a year ago when I wanted the same reaction you are asking for. Note: If you are a high track player, you may flare the fingers because this layout reverses the flare pattern.

Thanks,

You could do a radical drill pattern that will flare over the fingers and most likely the weight hole too, or you could just take the ball you are throwing now that is almost right for the shot except it will not stop hooking on the back end and just throw it with less turn in your wrist so the ball sets up earlier, maybe even dull the ball up or take it down to the next roughest grit if it is already dull.

I would not recommend the pin under thumb drilling unless you have pro caliber consistency in you release and then only if Rick Benoit drills it for you.

Other than that you might want to go with a pin axis drilling with the pin within 2 inches of the pap and 1 1/2 inch from the val. This will help the ball get into an early roll and stop hooking on the back end, and not sound like a dump-truck going down the lane.

Pin under bridge,in the 4" to 5" pin to pap range.Cg or mass bias at 25 to 45 degree range(or enough to need a fair sized weight hole on the val.Weight hole from on pap to 3 3/8" down, will hook-set for a lot of people on most conditions. Also use a little surface and change your rotation of axis to about 15 to 35 degrees.

I have a core power LRG with the pin under & left of thumb. The ball is polished & I get almost a hockeystick type hook set reaction with it. On a side note, I think you are more likely to track over the thumb than the fingers. Great ball for inside on fresh shot.

Thanks guys for all the help.  I'm going to try the hand position change and some surface.  I will just play the forward roll and see how it reacts on this league pattern this week.  I only have 3 weeks left of this pattern so I don't want to get to crazy with running out and buying a ball.  However a condition specific ball for a situation like this maybe good to have in the bag.

Side note:  I'm on a tough lane condition money league.  So this is not one of those blocked great walls of China.

For those that don't bowl on tough conditions should really consider joining a league like this.  It really makes bowling fun when you have to earn a low 200 game.  This kind of league also shows that not all bowling balls are good.
